A brief history of the Sacramento Kings

The Sacramento Kings are a National Basketball Association Team based out of Sacramento, California. The Kings are currently a member of the Pacific Division in the Western Conference and are owned by the Maloof family. Eric Musselman was recently hired to be the new head coach of the Kings. The Kings play their home games at the ARCO Arena in downtown Sacramento. The ARCO Arena was opened in 1988 and is also home to the Sacramento Monarchs of the WNBA. The ARCO Arena currently seats over 17,000 Basketball fans.

The Sacramento Kings franchise was founded in 1945. They have played in 4 different cities, Rochester, Cincinnati, Kansas City and Sacramento and used 2 different nick names, Royals and Kings. They have been a member of the NBA since its inception in 1950. They have won 1 NBA Finals Championship and appeared in 28 playoffs

The Franchise began as a member of the old NBL in Rochester. They were known as the Rochester Royals. The Royals played 3 seasons in the NBL, won 1 Championship and played in 3 NBL Finals. They Royals joined the BAA in 1948, played 1 season in the league and lost the BAA Finals to Minneapolis. The Following season the Royals joined the NBA when the BAA and NBL merged into one league. The Royals remained in Rochester for the next 8 seasons, appeared in 6 playoffs and won their only NBA Finals Title in 1951 when they beat the New York Knicks 4 games to 3. This Championship Royals team was led by Arnie Risen, Bob Davies and Jack Coleman. They were coached by Les Harrison.

The Royals moved to Cincinnati in 1957 and drafted Oscar Robinson in 1960. Robinson became the leagues best player but all of his individual awards were not enough to bring the Royals an NBA Championship. The Royals did make the playoffs 6 consecutive seasons with Robinson leading the way from 1962 through 1967. After a few sub par seasons by the Royals, Oscar Robinson was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in 1970. By 1972, the Royals moved to Kansas City and changed their name to the Kings. The Kings spent 12 seasons in Kansas City. They reached the Playoffs 5 times during those 12 years reaching the Conference finals in 1981 only to the loose to the Houston Rockets 4 games to 1. By 1985, the Kings were on the move again. This time they ended up in Sacramento, California.

The Kings have been in Sacramento for 21 seasons, their longest tenure in any city. Despite early disappointments that included only 2 playoffs in their first 13 seasons in Sacramento, the Kings have put together a string of successful seasons of late. Beginning in 1998, the Kings have reached the playoffs each of the past 8 seasons including a hard fought 7 game Conference Championship loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2002. The 2002 Kings recorded a franchise high 61 regular season wins with Rick Adelman coaching and All Star players like Peja Stojakovic, Chris Webber and Mike Bibby.

The Sacramento Kings finished the 2005/2006 season 4th in the division with a 44-38 record. They lost in the first round of the NBA Playoffs to the San Antonio Spurs 4 games to 2.
