    The Drowsy Chaperone is a musical comedy that honors the Jazz age musicals of the 1920s. It grew out of a stag party spoof of old jazz musicals in 1999. After being reformatted for production, it played in Toronto in 2001 and in Los Angeles in 2005. It opened on Broadway in 2006 and won 5 Tony awards. The musical is now on a US tour.

    The Drowsy Chaperone begins with the Man in Chair (the narrator) inside his apartment. He is a Broadway fanatic who repeatedly listens to a recording of a 1928 musical, "The Drowsy Chaperone". As the music begins to play, the rest of the cast comes out and transforms the apartment scene into a glittering 1920s setting. They then perform the musical as a magical dream for the Man in Chair. It is all about the adventures of a starlet and her producer. While seemly absorbed into the play, Man in Chair keeps up a running commentary with the audience.
