The Color Purple Information

    The Color Purple is a musical with an all Black cast. It is based on the 1982 book by Alice Walker and the hit 1985 movie, both of the same name. It opened on Broadway in December of 2005 and is planned to close on February 24, 2008. A national tour of the musical began in April of 2007. It won one Tony Award in 2006.

    The Color Purple is the story of Celie and her life during the first half of the 20th century in rural Georgia. The musical starts in 1909 with a pregnant 14-year-old Celie giving birth to her 2nd child. Her father gives the child away, just as he had done for the first one. A couple of years later he gives Celie to a local farmer, Mister, to be his wife and raise his son, Harpo. Mister constantly abuses Celie and attacks Celie's sister Nellie, when she comes to live with them. After being repulsed by Nellie, Mister kicks her off the farm and forbids Celie from checking the mailbox for Nellie's letters.

    Harpo grows up and leaves; returning with Sofia, whom he marries. Trying to follow Mister's and Celie's advice, he attempts to beat Sofia; instead, she soundly beats him up and leaves him. Harpo then turns his house into a juke joint and hires Squeak as a waitress. Squeak falls for Harpo and moves in with him. Then, Mister's long time lover, Shug Avery, comes to town sick. Celie cares for her and they become good friends. Shug finds a letter from Africa and gives it to Celie, it is from Nellie.

    In Act II, Celie discovers all the letters from Nellie that Mister had hidden. She finds out that Nellie is in Africa with Celie's two children. Sofia returns and is jailed for punching the mayor. Twelve years pass, Shug, and Sofia return. Sofia reunites with Harpo and Celie leaves with Squeak and Shug for Memphis. She curses Mister before she leaves. In Memphis, Celie discovers she has a flair for making pants. Meanwhile, Mister has fallen under Celie's curse and hits bottom. Celie then inherits her family home and starts a pants making business there. Mister has now changed and attempts to find Nellie. Skip to 1949, Celie's Fourth of July picnic is interrupted by the arrival of Nellie and Celie's children. Mister and Shug had arranged for the reunion.
