    Sunday in the Park with George is a musical inspired by Georges Seurat's painting "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte". It first opened on Broadway on May 2, 1984, winning 2 Tony awards and the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Its first Broadway revival opened on February 21, 2008. It will be closing on June 29. The musical is a fictional portrayal of the life of Georges Seurat in 1884 as he is painting his now famous painting.

    Sunday in the Park with George opens with Seurat sketching out the painting in the company of his common law wife Dot. His friends, the painter Jules and his wife Yvonne, arrive and analyze Georges' work. The scene then moves to the park, which Georges is painting. As the musical continues each character in the park, is painted into Seurat's painting and frozen in place. Then Georges dies and the frozen characters disappear.

    The scene now shifts to America 100 years into the future (1984), where Seurat's great-grandson, George – also a struggling artist, is displaying his first work, "Chromolume #7". George is then invited to display the work in France. While in France, he reads Dot's grammar book and has a fantasy interaction with her, during which all the original characters frozen into Seurat's painting reappear on stage. At the end they all disappear again leaving George with a blank canvas and new possibilities.
