Spring Awakening Information

    Spring Awakening is based on a very controversial 1891 German play of the same name by Frank Wedekind. It was banned in Germany due to the nature of its content (abortion, masturbation, rape, and suicide). The rock musical opened on Broadway on December 10, 2006. There is a national tour production planned for 2008. Spring Awakening won eight Tony awards. It tells the story of a group adolescent boys and girls in Germany during the 1890s.

    Spring Awakening starts with the girls and boys separately wondering about sex and tells about their frustrations and fantasies. Two of the boys, Moritz and Melchior, get in trouble at school. Moritz is failed and Melchior expelled for sticking up for him. Melchior then becomes sexually involved (semi rapes) with one of the girls, Wendla. Moritz after being kicked out of his home meets a homeless girl and rejects her; he then commits suicide. Two of his schoolmates engage in homosexual activities, and one of the girls admits to being sexually abused by her father. Wendla becomes ill and the doctor informs her mother she is pregnant. Her mother then forces her to have an illegal abortion, during which she dies. Melchior, who has been sent to a reform school, gets a letter from Wendla telling him she is pregnant. His classmates steal the letter and masturbate over it. Melchior then runs away from the reform school to see Wendla. On the way, he stops to visit Moritz's grave and discovers Wendla's new grave nearby. He then starts to kill himself out of grief; however, the spirits of Moritz and Wendla rise up and stop him.
