Ringling Bros B&B Circus Information Ringling Brothers and Barnum's & Bailey's Circus has been a world renown circus for over one hundred years. It all started out when P. T. Barnum was convinced to back a circus in 1871. It became known as "The Greatest Show on Earth" soon after he took it over. James A. Bailey's circus, formed in the late 1860's, soon became Barnum's main competitor. Instead of continuing their rivalry, they combined their circuses in 1881. After, Barnum died in 1891, Bailey bought his circus. The combined circus was highly successful in the eastern US. In 1897, Bailey took his circus on an extended tour of Europe, returning in 1902. The Ringling Brothers started their circus in 1884. At first, they traveled from town to town in the Midwest using horse drawn wagons; then moved to trains as the circus expanded. While Bailey was in Europe, they moved east. Upon his return, he discovered the new competition. He took his circus west of the Rockies for the first time in 1905, as a result. When Bailey died in 1906, the Ringling Brothers bought his circus. At first, they were operated as two separate circuses. However, to simplify operations, John Ringling combined the two circuses in 1919. The resulting circus was extremely successful in the 1920s. The circus business declined in the 1930s and 40's. In part due to a deadly big top fire in 1944. In 1956, the last big top performance occurred in Pittsburgh, Pa. In 1957, the circus started performing in indoor arenas. Circus attendance continued to fall, and the circus was sold to the Feld family in 1967. They split the show into two train tours in the US, the Red and Blue tours. They sold the circus to Mattel in 1971 (maintaining production control) and bought it back in 1984. In 1996, Kenneth Feld formed Feld Entertainment, Inc. It not only runs the circus, but also "Disney on Ice" and puts on large Broadway and Las Vegas productions. The circus now consists of three tours, the Red and Blue three ring circus tours via train, and the Gold tour, a one ring circus travelling by truck to smaller venues.
