My Fair Lady Information

    My Fair Lady is a musical that first opened on Broadway in 1956. It is based on the play Pygmalion written by George Bernard Shaw. It was written and produced by Frederick Lowe and Alan Jay Lerner. It has been nominated three times for a Tony Award. In 1953, movie producer Gabriel Pascal, who owned the rights to Pygmalion, contacted Lerner and Lowe, to write a musical based upon the play. They immediately hit obstacles in doing so and dropped the project. When Pascal died two years later, conditions being more favorable, they sought to gain the musical rights to Pygmalion. After spending 5 months in writing and forming up the musical, they received the rights from the bank. Rex Harrison was chosen to be Professor Higgins and Julie Andrews was picked to be Eliza. After its initial long-playing run, the musical has been revived on Broadway three times (1976, 1981, and 1993). It is now on tour in the US until June 22, 2008.

    The musical is about Professor Higgins being wagered by his friend and fellow linguist, Colonel Pickering, that he can not perform his boast that he can transform any girl and be able to pass her off as a duchess. To prove himself, he picks a poor flower seller, Eliza Doolittle, to train. After he starts the makeover of Eliza, her father, Alfred P. Doolittle shows up, demanding money. Higgins gets rid of him by recommending him as a Lecturer on moral values to an American millionaire. Doolittle later receives a 4,000 pound a year bequest from the deceased millionaire. His fortune is made.

    Meanwhile, Eliza has been hard at work correcting her manners, posture, and pronunciation (hs and long as particularly). When she finally gets the hang of it, Professor Higgins takes her on an outing to Ascot Racecourse. There her manners empress, but her Cockney attitudes and slang shocks polite society. However, she attracts a young man, Freddy Eynsford-Hill. The decisive test for Higgins is to take Eliza to the Embassy Ball, where she passes as a lady born with flying colors. She is even able to fool a Hungarian linguist into thinking she comes from Hungary. However, after walking into Higgins gleeful boasting to Pickering, she is deeply hurt and moves out. The next day, Higgins promptly misses her and moans for her return. The last scene has Eliza showing up at Higgins house, and that is where the play ends. So, get your My Fair Lady tickets today!
