A brief history of the Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks are a National Basketball Association Team based out of Atlanta, Georgia. The Hawks are owned by a group known as the Atlanta Spirit LLC and are coached by Mike Woodson. Woodson played in the NBA from 1981 through 1991 before moving into coaching. Mike took over the Hawks head coaching duties in 2005. The Hawks play their home games at Phillips Arena in downtown Atlanta. Phillips arena was opened in 1999 and replaced the Omni Coliseum. Phillips Arena is a state of the art facility that seats over 20,000 basketball fans.

The Hawks franchise began in 1946 as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks in the National Basketball League. The team was based out of the Quad Cities near Davenport, Iowa. The Blackhawks joined the NBA in 1950 and in 1951; the team relocated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and became known as the Hawks. After four seasons in Milwaukee, the team relocated to St. Louis. It was in St. Louis that the Hawks had their best seasons. The Hawks played in four NBA Finals from 1957 through 1961 and won their first and only NBA Finals Championship in 1958 by beating the Boston Celtics four games to two. It was the Celtics who beat the Hawks on their three other trips to the NBA Finals during this dominant era. That late 1950s Hawks dynasty was led by All Stars like Bob Pettit, Ed Macauley, Cliff Hagan, Clyde Lovellette and Lenny Wilkens. The St. Louis Hawks made six more trips to the Western Division Playoffs during the 1960s but failed to advance to the NBA finals each time.

In 1968, the Hawks moved again. This time they moved to Atlanta, Georgia where they currently reside. The Atlanta Hawks played their home games at the Alexander Memorial Coliseum from 1968-1972. The Hawks opened up a new arena in 1972, The Omni Coliseum, where they played until 1997. Until recently, the Atlanta Hawks have always been a formidable team. The Hawks reached the NBA playoffs 25 of its first 32 seasons in Atlanta. They reached the Western Division Finals their first two seasons in Atlanta but lost both series to the Los Angeles Lakers. Since then, they have yet to reach another Division Finals series. Throughout their years in Atlanta, the Hawks have had some great players like Hall of Famers ‘Pistol’ Pete Maravich, Dominique Wilkins and Connie Hawkins. The Hawks have also had other superstars like Stacey Augman, Mookie Blaylock, John Drew, Glenn ‘Doc’ Rivers, Steve Smith, Anthony ‘Spud’ Webb and Kevin Willis.

The last time the Atlanta Hawks saw any success was in 1999 under head coach Lenny Wilkens. The Hawks moved into their new home, Phillips Arena, that same season and made the playoffs for the last time. The Hawks were led by a bevy of role players like Steve Smith, Mookie Blaylock and Dikembe Mutombo. The 1999 Hawks team lost in the East Conference Semifinal playoffs to the New York Knicks 4 games to 0. Since that last winning season, the Hawks have changed ownership and brought in three different head coaches but have yet to win more then 33 games in any one season. They posted a league low 13 wins in the 2004-2005 season.

The Atlanta Hawks selected Shelden Williams from Duke University in the 2006 NBA Draft. Since then there has been a rise in ticket sales anticipating this rookie will help lift the Hawks out of the cellar. Along with Joe Johnson and Al Harrington, the 2006-2007 Atlanta Hawks hope to make remarkable strides on the court.
