A brief history of the Kansas City Royals

The Kansas City Royals are a Major League Baseball team that plays in the Central Division of the American League. The Royals are owned by David Glass and managed by Buddy Bell. The Royals play their home games at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, MO. Also known as The K, Kauffman Stadium was opened in 1973 and has a seating capacity of over 40,000 fans.

When the Kansas City As packed up and moved to Oakland after the 1967 season, Kansas City was left without a major league baseball team for the first time since the beginning of the 20th century. Local politicians pressured major league baseball enough to force them to expand in 1969. Thus the Kansas City Royals were born. Ewing Kauffman owned the expansion team and named the team Royals after the American Royal Livestock show that was held in Kansas City every year since 1899. The Royals first manager was Joe Gordon and their first star player was Lou Piniella. In less than 8 seasons the Royals had captured their first division crown. Whitey Herzog led the Royals to three straight division titles from 1976 1978 but each time the Royals lost in the American League Championship to the New York Yankees. The Royals featured young stars like George Brett and Frank White and they won a franchise record 102 games in 1977.

In 1980, Jim Frey led the Royals to their first American League Championship, this time besting the New York Yankees in the American League Championship series 3 games to 0. The Royals lost the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1980 World Series 4 games to 2. The Royals won two more division titles in the early 80s but failed to advance to the World Series. In 1985, with Dick Howser as their skipper, the Kansas City Royals won the American League Pennant by beating the Toronto Blue Jays in the Championship series 4 games to 3. The Royals then out lasted the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series 4 games to 3 for their first and only World Series Crown. The 1985 World Champion Royals were led by stars like George Brett, Dan Quisenberry, Bret Saberhagen, Frank White, Willie Wilson, Lonnie Smith and Charlie Leibrandt.

Since the 1985 World Series Championship, the Kansas City Royals have failed to qualify for post season play. Their best finish during the past 21 seasons has been a second place finish in the division way back in 1989. The Royals have gone through 11 different managers over the course of the past 20 years. The Royals have had some great young talent over the years like Bo Jackson, Brian McRae, David Cone, Tom Gordon, Johnny Damon and Jermaine Dye. Poor performance on the field coupled with poor performance at the ticket office has forced the Royals to trade their young talented All Stars just to unload the large salaries these new superstars were now demanding.

The Kansas City Royals original owner, Ewing Kauffman died in 1993 leaving the team with permanent Ownership for the next 7 seasons. Wal-Mart executive, David Glass purchased the team in 2000. Optimism was high for the Royals as they entered the new millennium. The Royals had their first winning season in 2003 since 1994 but followed that up with three straight 100 loss seasons. The Royals are still searching for the magic that propelled the team through the late 70s and early 80s. Loyal Kansas City Royal fans keep turning up at the ticket office each season hoping that this will be the year that the Royals youth resurgence will spark the team to a division title, an American League Pennant and a World Series Championship.
