A Brief History of the Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks were awarded an NFL franchise in 1975 to begin playing as an expansion team in 1976 along with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Seahawks first head coach was Jack Patera, they were owned by John Nordstrom and they played their home games at the Seattle Kingdome. In an effort to have the Bucs and Seahawks play each other twice and every other NFL team once during their first 2 seasons in the league, the Seahawks were a member of the NFC West in 1976 and then moved to the AFC West in 1977. The Seahawks won only two games in 1976, one versus the winless Buccaneers and the other versus the Atlanta Falcons at home, for their first home win.
For their first six seasons in the league, the Seattle Seahawks struggled to win games. Mike McCormick replaced Jack Patera in 1982 and then the Seahawks hired former Rams coach Chuck Knox in 1983. The Seahawks had their first winning season in 1983 and advanced all the way to the AFC Championship game before losing to the eventual Super Bowl Champions, the Raiders. The Seahawks avenged their 1983 playoff loss by beating the Raiders in the 1984 playoffs before losing in the next round to the Miami Dolphins. Chuck Knox would lead the Seahawks back to the playoffs in 1987 and again in 1988 when they won their first Division crown. Both trips to the playoffs ended with first round losses.
After 1988, the Seahawks would go on a ten year playoff drought. During that span, the Seahawks were bought by Ken Behring in 1988 and then sold to Paul Allen in 1997. They also went through three different coaches. Chuck Knox retired after the 1991 season and Tom Flores was the coach from 1992 - 1994, Dennis Erickson led the team from 1995-1998. Paul Allen hired Green Bay Packer coach, Mike Holmgren to coach the team in 1999. The team was forced to play half of their home games at Husky Stadium during the second half of the 1994 season and again in 2001 and 2002 while their new state of the art stadium, Qwest field, was being built. Holmgren led the Seattle Seahawks to the playoffs his first season in 1999 with a 9-7 record. The Seahawks lost in the first round to the Miami Dolphins. The Seahawks missed the playoffs from 2000 - 2002. They moved from the AFC West to the NFC West during realignment of the league and began playing their home games in their new, retractable roof stadium: Qwest field.
Holmgren led the Seattle Seahawks back to the playoffs in 2003 and the Seahawks won their third division title in 2004. The Seattle Seahawks had their finest season in 2005 by finishing the regular season with a 13-3 record. After starting the season 2-2, they won 11 in a row before losing a meaningless final game. They won their fourth division title and second in a row. They advanced through the NFC playoffs first by beating the Washington Redskins and then the Carolina Panthers in the NFC Championship game to give the Seattle Seahawks their first Conference title. The Seattle Seahawks met the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XL at Ford Field in Detroit, MI. The Seahawks lost a hard fought game by a score of 21-10. In 2006, the Seahawks returned to the playoffs with a 9-7 record, however, they lost the divisional game to the Bears. In 2007, the Seahawks had a slightly better record, 10-6; however, again they lost the divisional game, this time to the Packers.
