The Washington Redskins are on the right track. Behind the solid leadership of head coach Joe Gibbs, the Redskins returned the NFL Playoffs off last year. They knocked off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round, before falling to the eventual NFC champion Seattle Seahawks in conference semifinals. Having already won multiple Super Bowls, Gibbs is hungry to get back. Hell have a terrific cast of characters to work with. Clinton Portis proved to be one of the best running backs in the league last season. And wide receiver Santana Moss also had a breakout year in 2005. Veteran quarterback Mark Brunell continues to play well. And if age finally does catch-up to Brunell, second-year man Jason Campbell is ready to step in at a moments notice. The pieces are in place for a Super Bowl run. So scoop up some Washington Redskins tickets and make plans to be at glorious FedEx Field to see all the action!

A Brief History of the Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins began playing in the NFL in 1932 and were owned by George Preston Marshall. Originally they were known as the Boston Braves and played their home games at Braves Field. In 1933, they changed their name to the Redskins and moved to Fenway Park (home of the Red Sox) but attendance was poor. After 4 more seasons in Boston as the Boston Redskins, and a loss in the 1936 NFL Championship to the Green Bay Packers, the team moved to Washington D.C. In Washington, the Redskins played their home games at Griffith Stadium and became known as the Washington Redskins.

The Washington Redskins were very successful during their first 10 seasons in D.C. The Redskins played in 5 NFL Championship games during that span and won 2. The Redskins failed to win a division crown over the next two decades. They began playing their home games at D.C. Stadium, which was later renamed to RFK Stadium, in 1961. The Redskins original owner, George Preston Marshall died in 1969 and the team was sold to local attorney, Edward Bennett Williams.

The Washington Redskins hired future Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi in 1969 and he led them to their best record, 7-5-2, since 1955. The jubilation was short lived as Lombardi died of cancer just before the 1970 season. George Allen was hired to coach the Redskins in 1971 and he led the Redskins to their first Super Bowl appearance. The Redskins lost Super Bowl VII to the undefeated Miami Dolphins 14-7. The Redskins were always a force under coach George Allen making the playoffs 5 times during his 7 year reign.

In 1981, the Washington Redskins began a new era of dominance. The new owner, Jack Kent Cooke, hired Joe Gibbs from the San Diego Chargers to be the new head coach. Gibbs went on to lead the Redskins to four Super Bowls, winning three over a 10 year period. In 1983, the Redskins won their first Championship in 40 years by beating the Miami Dolphins 27-17 in Super Bowl XVII. The Redskins won Super Bowl XXII in 1988 by beating the Denver Broncos 42-10. The Redskins won their third title under Joe Gibbs in 1992 when the beat the Buffalo Bills 37-24 in Super Bowl XXVI. A year later, Joe Gibbs retired from coaching to pursue his interest in auto racing (NASCAR).

The Washington Redskins began playing at a new facility in Landover, Maryland named after their late owner, Jack Kent Cooke. Cooke died the same season and the team was sold to local businessman Daniel Snyder. Despite making the playoffs in 1999, the Redskins struggled to win games through most of the late 90s and early 00s. The Redskins stadium rights were sold to the highest bidder and Jack Kent Cooke Stadium was renamed FedEx Field.

The Washington Redskins went through a bevy of head coaches during the early Daniel Snyder era including Norv Turner, Marty Schottenheimer and Steve Spurrier looking for a formula for success. In 2004, Snyder and the Redskins lured retired coach Joe Gibbs back to the NFL. At the same time, Fed Ex field was expanded to hold over 91,000 fans. In just his second season after returning to coaching in the NFL, Joe Gibbs led the Washington Redskins back to the playoffs for the fist time in 7 years. The Redskins finished second in the NFC East in 2005 and qualified for the playoffs as a Wild Card team with a 10-6 record. The Redskins won their Wild Card game but lost in the divisional round to the eventual NFC Champions, Seattle Seahawks.

Due to their 2005 resurgence, Washington Redskins football tickets have become hot commodities in the DC area. Despite playing in the toughest division in the NFL, most fans and experts believe the Washington Redskins are a team to be reckoned with.
