A brief history of the Super Bowl

The NFLs Championship game, dubbed the Super Bowl, has become an American Holiday. Every year on Super Bowl Sunday, football fans from around the country attend some type of Super Bowl party. The Super Bowl is one of the most watched television events each year. The game itself is often a side show to the extravaganza of events held during the week at the location of the game.

The very first Super Bowl was held on January 15, 1967. The game was not yet known as the Super Bowl. Instead the game was referred to as the AFL-NFL World Championship. In fact the name Super Bowl did not come about until after the two leagues announced a merger in 1969. The name Super Bowl came from Kansas City Chiefs owner, Lamar Hunt, who got the name from a toy his daughter played with called a Super Ball. The official name, Super Bowl was not used until the third game but the first two games were re-christened Super Bowls I and II.

There have been 41 Super Bowls played and the hype surrounding the game has grown each year. The Super Bowl sets the stage for football stars to become Super Bowl Legends. Players like Joe Nameth, Lynn Swann, Joe Montana, Doug Williams, Troy Aikman, Tom Brady and Hines Ward have all etched their names in immortality by shining on the NFLs grandest stage. The winning team is awarded the Vince Lombardi trophy as the World Champions of American football. Some of the NFLs greatest dynasties earned that moniker by their feats in Super Bowl games. The Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos and New England Patriots have earned the distinction of being an NFL Dynasty by winning multiple Super Bowls in a short time span. Every NFL Teams season begins with one goal in mind, the Super Bowl, anything less can be quite disappointing.

The location of the Super Bowl is chosen years in advance to give the host city a head start on getting the area ready for the spectacle to come. The Super Bowl is usually played in a warm climate city like Miami or Southern California but there have been games in cold climate cities like Detroit and Minnesota because they have a domed facility to prevent poor weather from affecting the outcome of the game. The host cities economy gets an enormous boost when the Super Bowl arrives. The Super Bowl is not just a single day event, it is an entire week extravaganza.

Super Bowl XLII will be held on February 3, 2008 in Glendale, Arizona.
