No team in the NFL did more with less last year than the San Francisco 49ers. But in 2006, second-year head coach Mike Nolan has more to work with. That could mean trouble for the rest of the NFL. The biggest offseason acquisition came via the draft, when Maryland tight end Vernon Davis slid down to the 49ers. An athletic freak, Davis can run like a receiver and block like a tackle. He'll be a major force in the 49ers' arsenal, which will be piloted by 2005 No. 1 overall pick, quarterback Alex Smith. A return to glory is in the near future and Bay Area fans are clamoring to get their hands of San Francisco 49ers tickets. So don't wait. Reserve yours now.

A brief history of the San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers began playing in the All-American Football Conference in 1946. They played their home games at Kezar Stadium and their first head coach was Buck Shaw. The Niners, as they are often referred as were never able to unseat the Cleveland Browns as the best team in the AAFL, finishing in second place four seasons in a row from 1946-1949.

In 1950, the AAFL merged with the NFL and the San Francisco 49ers were placed in the National Conference. The Niners struggled to win games over the next 20 years, making the playoffs only once. In 1958, they finished second in the NFL west and lost to the Detroit Lions in the playoffs.

Head Coach Dick Nolan led the San Francisco 49ers to their first division crown in 1970 with a 10-3-1 record. That same season the 49ers moved into their new home, Candlestick Park. The Niners would repeat as NFC West Champions three straight seasons from 1970-1972 but each season ended in heart break as they lost to the Dallas Cowboys each trip to the playoffs.

After Dick Nolan left in 1975, the Niners slipped to a league low 2 wins in 1978 and again in 1979. The San Francisco 49ers hired Bill Walsh from the University of Stanford to be their new head coach in 1979 and Walsh guided the Niners to the top of the NFL by 1981. In 1981, the Niners won the NFC West; they beat the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship game and won Super Bowl XVI with a 26-21 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals for their first NFL Championship.

Bill Walsh led the San Francisco 49ers to 7 playoff appearances in an 8 year span. They won 6 Division titles and 3 Super Bowls during his tenure and were easily the most dominant team in the NFL for more than a decade. Walsh retired after Super Bowl XXIII and George Seifert took over the reigns. Seifert quietly guided the San Francisco 49ers back to the Super Bowl in 1989. The Niners became the first NFC team to win four Super Bowls when the beat the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV.

The San Francisco 49ers continued their dominance into the 1990s by appearing in the playoffs 8 of the 10 years, winning the NFC West Crown 6 of the 10 years and winning a record setting fifth Super Bowl. The 49ers won their fifth Super Bowl in 1994 when they beat the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX 49-26. Steve Marriucci took over the head coaching duties in 1997 and led the San Francisco 49ers to 4 playoffs in 6 seasons but each time they would loose before reaching the Conference Championship game.

After two plus decades of leveraging the system to keep the San Francisco 49ers on top of the NFL, the Niners were finally forced to rebuild their team. Dennis Erickson took over the reigns in 2003 and won only 2 games in 2004. In 2005, the San Francisco 49ers hired a familiar friend. Mike Dick Nolan, son of the Niners coach from the early 1970s, Dick Nolan, was hired to coach the team. The San Francisco 49ers used their overall number 1 draft pick in the 2005 NFL draft to pick Quarterback from Utah, Alex Smith. Mike Nolan, with Alex Smith under center, led the Niners to only 4 wins in 2005.

The 2006 season looks bright for the San Francisco 49ers. Ticket sales have increased with anticipation of the birth of a new dynasty in the Bay area. The San Francisco 49ers have entered in a new era with an old name leading the way.
