San Diego Chargers tickets look to rise to the top of the NFL heap in 2006. The Chargers last campaign ended at 9-7, somewhat embarrassing after their rise from the ashes in 2005. But the 2006 version of the lightning bolts wont be the same old Chargers. The long awaited debut of Philip Rivers is in the cards now that Drew Brees has packed up and headed for New Orleans. Rivers has been quietly waiting in the wings but now hes ready to take command of an offense spearheaded by the NFLs best running back LaDainian Tomlinson. In reality, one of the Chargers biggest problem, cornerback, has been solved through the draft with the choice of Antonio Cromartie. The Florida State product has all the tools necessary to shut down the NFLs best receivers if hes fully recovered from a hip injury. Offensively, the Chargers spent a choice on tackle Marcus McNeil to help keep Rivers healthy. If Rivers does go down though, the Chargers assured themselves a promising young backup with the drafting of Charlie Whitehurst, the 65 gunslinger from Clemson. With Rivers a the wheel, Chargers tickets take on a whole new life.

A brief history of the San Diego Chargers

The San Diego Chargers were among 7 other teams that formed the American Football League in 1960. The Chargers played their first season in Los Angeles as the LA Chargers but they moved to San Diego in 1961. The Chargers were originally owned by hotel heir Barron Hilton and coached by Sid Gilman.

Once the Chargers moved to San Diego, they played their home games at Balboa Stadium. The Chargers won their division 5 of their first 6 seasons in the league and appeared in 5 AFL Championships. They won only 1 championship when the beat the Boston Patriots in the 1963 AFL Championship game. The Chargers finished third in their division for the next four seasons. In 1970, with the AFL - NFL merger, the Chargers joined the AFC West. Sid Gilman retired as coach in 1969 and the Chargers fell on hard time.

It wasn't until 1979 that the San Diego Chargers would make it back to the NFL playoffs. Under Coach Don Coryell, the Chargers won three consecutive AFC West division titles from 1979 to 1981. The Chargers resurrected the old AFL style of a wide open offense, deemed 'air Coryell.' The Chargers lost in the playoffs each of the three playoff appearances.

The mid 1980s were reminiscent of the mid 1970s as the San Diego Chargers were a poor team and failed to finish better than 3rd in their division for 9 years in a row. In 1992, the Chargers hired Bobby Ross as their new head coach. Ross led the Chargers to the AFC West title his first season and then he led them to their first Super Bowl appearance in 1994. The Chargers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1994 AFC Championship game but lost to the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XXIX. The Chargers made the playoffs again in 1995 but failed to advance to the Super Bowl and a year later Bobby Ross was gone along with the Success of the Chargers.

Once again, the San Diego Chargers found themselves in the midst of hard times. The Chargers failed to record a winning season from 1996 through 2003. In 2004, the Chargers hired Marty Schottenhiemer. Schottenhiemer had a winning track record as a head coach in the NFL and his experience paid off immediately as he led the Chargers back to the Playoffs his first season with team. After making the playoffs in 2004, most fans expected the Chargers to repeat their 2004 performance but injuries and a hard schedule kept the Chargers from the playoffs in 2005. The Chargers finished the 2005 season with a 9-7 record and again have high expectations for 2006.

The Chargers lost their Pro Bowl starting Quarterback during the 2006 off season when Drew Brees signed a contract to play with the New Orleans Saints. If the Chargers expect to return to the NFL Playoffs in 2006, their second year quarterback, Phillip Rivers, will have to mature fast. Fortunately for Rivers and the rest of the San Diego Charger fans, he has one of the best Running backs in the league to lean on, LaDanian Tomlinson. Tomlinson is a threat to go all the way every time he touches the ball either from a running the ball perspective or if he his catching the ball out of the backfield. On the other side of the ball, the Chargers offer up one of the stingiest defenses in the NFL. With an explosive offense and a stingy defense, everyone of the San Diego Charger ticket holders are hoping to be rooting their team all the way to Super Bowl XLI and most experts feel the same way.
