A Brief History of the Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles began playing in the NFL in 1933. Formerly the Frankfurt Yellow Jackets, the team was owned by Bert Bell and Lud Wray. The new owners choose the name Eagles in honor of the symbol of the New Deals National Recovery Act. The Philadelphia Eagles played their home games at Baker Bowl in Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Eagles were a large part of the early days of Pro Football. During their first decade of existence, the Eagles changed ownership, merged with the Pittsburgh Steelers for one season and changed home fields from Baker Bowl to Municipal Stadium before finally settling down at Shibe Park. In 1948 the Philadelphia Eagles won their first NFL Championship, defeating the Chicago Cardinals 7-0. The Eagles defended their NFL title in 1949 with a 14-0 win over the Los Angeles Rams becoming the only team in NFL history to record back to back NFL Championship game shutouts.

The decade of the 1950s brought a lot of change and inconsistency to the Philadelphia Eagles. During a span of 10 seasons, the Eagles had 6 different head coaches and moved their home games from Shibe Park to the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field. Attendance to home games almost doubled with the move. The Philadelphia Eagles ended the decade on a high note by winning their third and last NFL Championship in 1960 with a 17-13 come from behind win over the Green Bay Packers.

The Philadelphia Eagles fell on hard times during the 1960s. The team went through 3 different owners and 3 different head coaches. They failed to make any playoff appearances and had only 1 winning season during the decade.

The 1970s decade began with new hope for the Philadelphia Eagles; with a new owner, a new coach, and a new stadium, Veterans Stadium, in 1971. The Eagles struggled to win games during the first half of the decade but they hired Dick Vermeil to coach the team in 1976 and in 1978 he led them to their first winning season in over a decade and their first playoff appearance in 18 years. The Philadelphia Eagles returned to the playoffs again in 1979 and had one of their best seasons ever in 1980. They finished the season with a 12-4 record and breezed through the NFC playoffs. They reached the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history but lost Super Bowl XV to the Oakland Raiders, 27-10.

After 2 more fairly successful seasons in Philadelphia, head coach Dick Vermeil resigned before the 1983 season. The Eagles slid from dominance during the middle part of the 1980s but returned to the playoffs by the decade's end with head coach Buddy Ryan. Ryan led the Philadelphia Eagles to the playoffs 3 more times before he was replaced in 1991 by Rich Kotite. Injuries decimated the team and they failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in 4 years.

The Philadelphia Eagles struggled to overcome mediocrity for the remainder of the decade. In 1999, the Eagles hired Andy Reid to be the new head coach. That same year, they drafted QB Donovan McNabb in the NFL draft. Those 2 moves secured the Philadelphia Eagles dominance at the beginning of the new millennium. The Philadelphia Eagles advanced to 4 straight NFC Championship games from 2001 to 2004. They reached their second Super Bowl in franchise history in 2004 by beating the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL Championship Game. However, the Eagles lost Super Bowl XXXIX to the New England Patriots by a score of 24-21. Injuries and a suspension of Pro Bowl Wide Receiver Terrell Owens cost the Philadelphia Eagles any chance of repeating as NFC Champions in the 2005 season. They finished the year without making it to the playoffs. The 2006 season proved to be different. The Eagles finished with a 10-6 record and made it back into the Playoffs, however, they lost the divisional game to New Orleans. In 2007, the Eagles ended with a 8-8 record and missed the playoffs. So, get your Philadelphia Eagles tickets today and see if they can regain their momentum and win the Super Bowl!
