To say Oakland Raiders tickets have been disappointing the last few years may be an understatement. But take heart Raiders fans. Things are looking up. Art Shell is back in town. Shell promptly livened up the Raiders quarterback derby by signing free agent Aaron Brooks. Brooks spent the last few years re-writing the record books in New Orleans where he took more than his share of the blame for coaching and front office miscues. Hell be solid in Oakland with Randy Moss on the other end of his passes. Oakland filled their primary defensive need with the drafting of Michael Huff of Texas, rated as the top cornerback in the draft by many NFL experts. With Shell, a former Raider running the show, the boys in Silver and Black will make Raiders tickets something special again.

A brief history of the Oakland Raiders

The Oakland Raiders joined the American Football League in 1960. The city of Oakland was not the original choice of the AFL for expansion in 1960 but when the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul) decided to accept an offer from the NFL and bypass their original plan to join the AFL the AFL was left scrambling to find a city to host their new team.

The city of Oakland was chosen because of their West Coast location. A limited partnership owned the team headed by Wayne Valley. Eddie Erdelatz was the first head coach and the Raiders played their home games in San Francisco at Kezer Stadium. The Raiders won 6 games their first season but could muster only 3 wins in the next 2 seasons. The Raiders hired Al Davis to coach the team in 1963 and gave him the title of GM. Davis led the Raiders to a 10-4 record his first season at the helm.

Al Davis gave up his head coaching duties in 1966 to become the commissioner of the AFL. Davis worked hard with the NFL to force a merger but would have preferred to remain 2 equal but separate leagues versus the one league that was agreed upon by the AFL owners. Once the league merged into one, Al Davis was out of a job. He lobbied his way back onto the Raiders offices and brokered a small partnership out of the deal.

John Roach led the Raiders to their first Super Bowl appearance in 1967 when they faced the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl II. The Raiders lost to the Packers 33-14. Roach led the Raiders back to the playoffs in 1968.

The first move Davis made upon his return to Oakland was to hire John Madden as the new head coach of the Raiders in 1969. Madden led the Oakland Raiders on a decade of dominance not seen in franchise history. The Raiders won 6 AFC West division titles during the 1970s and won AFC Championship in 1977. The Raiders beat the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl XI for the first NFL Championship. Madden retired after the 1978 season and was replaced by the Raiders former QB, Tom Flores.

Tom Flores led the Oakland Raiders to two more Super Bowl wins. The Raiders beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XV and then they beat the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XVIII. In 1982, Al Davis, angry at the City of Oakland for not increasing the Oakland Stadium capacity moved the team to Los Angeles. The Raiders played in Los Angeles for the next 10 plus seasons but would make the playoffs 7 out of 13 seasons while in Los Angeles. In 1995, Davis brokered a deal to move the Raiders back to Oakland.

The Raiders won their first division title upon their return to Oakland in 2000 under head coach Jon Gruden. The Raiders won 3 division titles in a row and advanced to Super Bowl XXXVII despite the loss of head coach Jon Gruden who was affectively traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Ironically, it was Jon Grudens new team, the Buccaneers that faced the Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII. The Buccaneers beat the Raiders rather convincingly 48-21.

The Raiders played poorly the next few seasons and Al Davis changed coaches three times. In 2006, Davis rehired Art Shell, who had coached the team from 1989-1994. Despite the teams current or previous seasons record, Raider Nation continues to support the Raiders by buying up all the available Raider Football tickets in town.
