The enthusiasm for New York Jets tickets got a boost with the hiring of new head coach Eric Mangini. Mangini is a graduate of the Bill Belichick University of NFL head coaches having spent the last few years as the Patriots defensive coordinator. Under Mangini, the Jets immediately began to rebuild from the ground up with the drafting of DBrickashaw Ferguson, the 6-6 300+ pound tackle from Virginia. Hoping to prevent injury from once again cutting short the season of quarterback Chad Pennington, Mangini added center Nick Mangold of Ohio State, rated by some as the best center available in the draft. With New York only a couple of injury plagued years removed from the NFL Playoffs, the new leadership of Mangini, coupled with a solid draft, has lit a fire under the enthusiasm for New York Jets tickets.

A brief history of the New York Jets

The New York Titans, which was the Jets original name, began playing the American Football League in 1960. The Team was owned by Harry Wismer, who sold the team to Leon Hess in 1963. The Titans played their home games at the Polo Grounds in New York from 1960-1963.

Sammy Baugh was the original coach for the Titans and he led them to .500 records for their first two seasons. Clyde Bulldog Turner took over the coaching duties in 1962 and the Titans slipped to 5-9. The team was sold in the off season, and the new owners moved the Team to Shea Stadium and changed the names to the Jets because Shea was located so close to the airport and hired a new coach, former Baltimore Colt head coach, Weeb Ewbank.

Ewbank was the head coach for the New York Jets for 11 seasons from 1963-1973 and led the Jets to an improbably win over his old team, the NFL's Baltimore Colts. The Jets won the AFL East division in 1968 with a 11-3 record. They beat the Oakland Raiders in the AFL Championship game 27-23. The Jets were huge underdogs versus the NFL's Baltimore Colts in the third meeting of the NFL - AFL Champions (Super Bowl III). A young Joe Nameth guaranteed a Jets victory the day before the game and the Jets lived up to their young superstar Quarterbacks words by defeating the Colts 16-7 for their only World Championship. That victory gave the AFL credibility and hastened the AFL - NFL merger that was formalized in 1970.

The New York Jets won the AFL East division again in 1969 but lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs. The Jets struggled though out the 1970s failing to finish a single season with a .500 record. After Ewbank retired in 1973, the Jets had four different head coaches before Walt Michaels led them back to the playoffs in 1981. Michaels led the Jets to the AFC title game in 1982 but they lost to division rivals Miami Dolphins.

Two seasons later, the New York Jets were back in the playoffs with Joe Walton as their head coach. The Jets lost both times in the 1985 and 1986 playoffs. From 1987 through 1997, the Jets made the playoffs only once; a 1991 Wild Card playoff loss to the Oilers. Legendary coach Bill Parcells was hired in 1997 to turn the struggling franchise around and he did just that.

In 1998, Parcells led the Jets to their first division title since the AFL - NFL merger in 1970. The Jets beat the Jaguars in the first round but lost to the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship game. Parcells resigned after a disappointing 8-8 season in 1999.

The Jets hired former Philadelphia Eagle, Herman Edward to be their head coach in 2001. Herman led the Jets to back to back playoff appearances and 3 trips to the post season in 5 years. The Jets lost in the Wild card round to the Raiders in 2001. They won the AFC East in 2002 but lost again to the Raiders, this time in the Divisional round. In 2004 the Jets made the Playoffs as a Wild card team but lost to the Steelers in Overtime in the Divisional round. The Jets had all but won this game before penalties and two late missed field goals cost them the game.

Injuries to key players cost the New York Jets in 2005 as they slipped to a 4-12 record. Herman Edwards was replaced by Eric Mangini after the season. A healthy Jets team and a new focus has led to optimism among the J - E - T - S faithful. The AFC East appears wide open in 2006, with anyone of the four teams having a legitimate shot at winning the Division. The New York Jets are hoping that they are the team that leads the pack so get your tickets fast.
