A Brief History of the Giants

The New York Giants began playing football in the NFL in 1925. They used the name New York Football Giants to avoid confusion the major league baseball team and even though the baseball Giants moved to San Francisco in the late 1950s, the Football Giants still use the name New York Football Giants as its corporate name today.

The Giants were owned by Tim Mara and they played their home games at Polo Grounds in New York. The New York Giants won their First NFL Championship in 1927. Because there was no official NFL Championship game played, the New York Giants won their first NFL Championship in 1927 because of a league leading 11-1-1 record.

The New York Giants won their second NFL Title in 1934. After loosing the Chicago Bears in the 1933 NFL Championship 23-21 at Wrigley Field, the New York Giants returned the favor in 1934 by beating the Chicago Bears 30-13 at the Polo Grounds.

The New York Giants would go on to win 2 more NFL Championships before the NFL AFL merger in 1970. They won their third title in 1938 with a 23-17 win over the Green Bay Packers and they won their fourth title in 1956 with a win over the Chicago Bears 47-7. The Giants also began playing their home games at Yankee Stadium in 1956. The New York Giants would call Yankee Stadium home from 1956-1973. In between the New York Giants appeared in 10 more Championship games including arguably the greatest game ever played, the 1958 NFL Championship game. The New York Giants lost to the Baltimore Colts in Over Time 23-17 in 1958 and then went on to loose in straight NFL Championship game losses from 1961-1963.

The Giants failed to make the playoffs from 1964-1982. During that time, they moved from Yankee Stadium in 1973 to the Yale Bowl in New Haven Connecticut to Shea Stadium in 1975 before eventually playing their home games in East Rutherford New Jersey at a new State of the Art Football stadium, deemed Giants Stadium in 1976.

The New York Giants started to turn the corner in 1980 when they hired George Young to be the GM. In 1980, Young hired Ray Perkins as the new head coach. Perkins left in 1982 and Young hired Bill Parcells to replace Perkins. The Giants made the playoffs for the first time in 2 decades in 1983 and returned to the post season in both the 1984 and 1985. In 1986, the New York Giants returned to the top of the NFL world by beating the Denver Broncos 39-20 in Super Bowl XXI. A players strike in 1987 cost the New York Giants playoff spot. They would miss the playoffs again in 1988 but returned to the playoffs in 1989 and in 1990 won their second Super Bowl under coach Bill Parcells. The Giants beat the Buffalo Bills Super Bowl XXV by the narrowest margin in Super Bowl history, 20-19.

Bill Parcells resigned in the spring of 1991 and the New York Giants struggled to maintain some mediocrity from 1991 1996, making the playoffs only once during that span. In 1997, the Giants hired Jim Fassel as their head coach and they made the playoffs his first season. After missing the playoffs in 1998 and 1999, the Giants returned the playoffs in 2000 where they eventually lost Super Bowl XXXV to a dominant Baltimore Ravens team 34-7. After missing the playoffs 2 of the next 3 seasons, Jim Fassel was replaced by Tom Caughlin. The Giants used their number 1 draft pick in 2004 to draft QB Eli Manning. Manning struggled his rookie season but led the New York Giants back to the playoffs in 2005.

After making the playoffs under second year QB Eli Manning in 2005, hopes are very high in New York as the 2006 New York Giants Football tickets have become the hottest tickets in town.
