A brief history of the New England Patriots

The New England Patriots, originally known as the Boston Patriots, joined the American Football League (AFL) as a charter member in 1960. The Patriots were owned by Billy Sullivan, they played their home games at Nickerson Field from 1960-1962 and famous Fenway Park from 1963-1968. The Patriots first head coach was Lou Saban.

The Patriots had a rather obscure beginning during the 1960s. The Patriots won on one division title during the decade. The won the AFL east in 1963 and beat the Bills in the playoffs before loosing to the San Diego Chargers in the AFL Championship game. The Patriots were shutout of the playoffs for the rest of the decade.

The Patriots moved from Boston to Foxboro in 1971 and changed their name to the New England Patriots. They played their home games at Foxboro Stadium from 1971 - 2001. The Patriots continued to falter as they reached the Playoffs only twice during the 1970s. Head Coach Chuck Fairbanks led the Patriots to the playoffs in 1976 and an AFC East division title in 1978. The Patriots failed to win a single playoff game in either season.

It wasn't until 1985 that the New England Patriots would win their first ever playoff game. The Patriots were coached by Raymond Berry and they finished the season with an 11-5 record. The Patriots beat the Jets in the Wild Card game and then the beat the heavily favored Raiders in the Divisional round. The Patriots faced the Miami Dolphins in the AFC Championship 31-14 to advance to Super Bowl XX. The Patriots were over matched in the Super Bowl and lost to the Bears 46-10. The Patriots returned to the playoffs in 1986 by winning the AFC East division but lost in the first round to the Denver Broncos.

The Patriots reached a franchise low in the late 80s and early 90s, winning only 1 game in 1990. The team was sold to local business man Robert Kraft who hired legendary coach, Bill Parcells to lead the team in 1993. Parcells had the Patriots back in the Playoffs by 1994 and in 1996, Parcells led the Patriots to the Super Bowl. The Patriots won the AFC East in 1996 with a 11-5 record. The beat the Steelers and Jaguars to win AFC Championship and then faced the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXI. The Packers won the game 35-21 and Parcells resigned shortly afterwards.

In 2000, Kraft hired Bill Belicheck (Parcells defensive Coordinator) to coach the Patriots. After a 5-11 seasons, Belicheck led the Patriots to their third Super Bowl in 2001. The Patriots, behind QB Tom Brady, advanced to Super Bowl XXXVI by beating the Raiders and Steelers in the Playoffs. The Rams were heavy favorites to beat the upstart New England Patriots, but the Patriots pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history by defeating the Rams 20-17 for their first NFL Championship.

The New England Patriots won 3 Super Bowls in a span of 4 years. They beat the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII and then they beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX. The New England Patriots had become the latest NFL dynasty in an era of pro football where dynasty's are harder than ever to achieve.

Despite failing to make it to the Super Bowl in 2005, the New England Patriots did win the third AFC East division title in a row last season. The Patriots beat the Jaguars in the Wild Card playoffs before losing to the Denver Broncos in the Divisional round. 2006 is as bright as ever for the New England Patriots. They still have their hall of fame coach, Bill Belicheck and All Pro Quarterback Tom Brady. The Patriots are poised to make another run at a Super Bowl ring in 2006 so get your Patriot tickets fast, before they are all gone.
