A brief history of the Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings joined the NFL in 1961 as an expansion team and played their home games at Metropolitan Stadium in Minneapolis, MN. Norm Van Brocklin was their first head coach as the Vikings won their first game in 1961 by beating the Chicago Bears 37-13. The Vikings finished the 1961 season with a 3-11 record. The Vikings struggled through the early years and when Van Brocklin resigned in 1967, they hired Bud Grant from the CFL to be their new head coach.

The Minnesota Vikings won their first division title and made their first playoff appearance in 1969. They would go on to win 4 straight division titles including the NFL Championship in 1970. The Vikings were heavily favored to beat the 1970 AFL Champion Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl IV but they failed to respond as the Chiefs won 23-7.

The Minnesota Vikings were one of the most successful franchises during the 1970s decade winning 8 division titles and 4 conference titles. Despite all of their success, most Vikings fans would deem the decade a disaster because the Vikings lost a record 4 Super Bowl games. The Vikings lost to the Chiefs in Super Bowl IV 23-7, they lost to the Miami Dolphins 24-7 in Super Bowl VIII. The Vikings lost Super Bowl IX to the Steelers 16-6 and then they lost to the Oakland Raiders 32-14 in Super Bowl XI.

In 1982, the Minnesota Vikings moved into their new home, the Hubert Humphrey Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis, MN. The Metrodome is home to the Vikings, baseball's Minnesota Twins, and the NCAA Minnesota Golden Gophers Football team. The Metrodome seats 63,000 football fans.

After leading the Minnesota Vikings to 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons as head coach, Bud Grant retired. The Vikings hired Les Steckel in 1984 but after a terrible 3-13 season, the owners convinced Bud Grant to return. Grant coached the Vikings for one final season in 1985 and finished a respectable 7-9. Jerry Burns took over the head coaching duties in 1986 and led the Vikings to the playoffs 3 times in 5 seasons including a division title in 1989.

In 1992, the Minnesota Vikings hired Stanford head coach, Dennis Green. In 10 seasons as their coach, Green led the Vikings to 8 playoff appearances, 4 division titles and 2 NFC Championship games. The Vikings were heavy favorites in both Championship games but lost both at home. Red McCombs bought the Vikings in 1998 and eventually forced Dennis Green out by the end of the 2001 season. Mike Tice took over for Green at the end of 2001 and finished his first full season as head coach with a 6-10 record.

The Vikings began the 2003 and 2004 seasons with remarkable success but each time the team faltered in the second half of the season and failed to make the playoffs in 2003 and backed into the playoffs in 2004 with a 8-8 record. Zigi Wilf purchased the team in 2005 from McCombs and promised to run a cleaner ship. Many of the Vikings distracting players were cut or traded. At the end of the 2005 season, having finished a disappointed 9-7 and just 1 game out of the playoffs, the Vikings fired head coach Mike Tice.

The Vikings will begin the 2006 season with a new coach, Brad Childress, a new QB and a new hope. Minnesota Vikings season ticket holders are hoping that 2006 and beyond will bring a new era of success for the city of Minnesota and for their beloved Vikings.
