The Miami Dolphins joined the American Football League (AFL) in 1966 as an expansion team. The Dolphins were owned by Joseph Robbie and actor Danny Thomas. Thomas would eventual sale his portion of the team to Joe Robbie. The Dolphins played their home games at the Orange Bowl in Miami from 1966-1986. The first head coach for the Dolphins was George Wilson.

Wilson led the Dolphins for four seasons. The team struggled to win games during those early years. In 1970, with the merger of the AFL and NFL, the Dolphins hired former Baltimore Colts head coach, Don Shula. Shula was the Dolphins head coach for the next 26 seasons and finished his career with more coaching victories than any coach in NFL history.

The Miami Dolphins were an immediate success under Don Shula. The Dolphins made the Playoffs in 1970 and only finished below .500 two times during Don Shula's 26 seasons as head coach. The Dolphins won their division and advanced to Super Bowl VI in Shula's second seasons defeating his old team, the Baltimore Colts in the AFC Championship game. The Dolphins lost Super Bowl VI to the Dallas Cowboys by a score of 24-3 but that would be the last game they would loose until 1973.

The Miami Dolphins completed the most improbably season in 1972. They finished the regular season with a perfect 14-0 mark. The breezed through the playoffs and beat the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII to complete the first and only Perfect season (including playoffs) in NFL History. The Dolphins streak of unbeaten games ended early in the 1973 season with a loss to the Raiders but the Dolphins kept on marching through the season, ending with a 12-2 mark. The Dolphins earned their third straight trip to the Super Bowl and won their second NFL Title by defeating the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl VIII 24-7.

The Dolphins remained a formidable team throughout the next two decades but they would fail to win another Super Bowl. They did advance to the Super Bowl twice during the 80s but lost each time, once to the Redskins in Super Bowl XVII and once to the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XIX.

A new stadium was built in 1986 to host the Miami Dolphins home games. Joe Robbie Stadium, now known as Dolphin Stadium, opened in 1987 and is home to the Miami Dolphins and Florida Marlins. Three Super Bowls have been played at Dolphins Stadium as well as two World Series.

Don Shula retired after the 1995 season and was replaced by former Dallas Cowboys coach, Jimmy Johnson. Johnson led the Dolphins to three playoff births in four seasons but he resigned after an embarrassing 62-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 1999 playoffs. Dave Wannstedt, the defensive coordinator for Jimmy Johnson, took over as head coach and led the Dolphins from 2000-2004. The Dolphins made the playoffs during Wannstedts first two seasons but slipped to a 4-12 record by 2004.

Former LSU Tigers head coach, Nick Saban was named as the Miami Dolphins new head coach in 2005. The Dolphins started the season out slowly but ended winning their final 5 games and finishing the season with a 9-7 mark. The Dolphins made a number of moves in the off season, including signing Pro Bowl QB Daunte Cullpepper, in an effort to improve their offense for 2006.
