A Brief History of the Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs were originally known as the Dallas Texans. The Texans were a member of the 8 original AFL teams that began playing in 1960. Lamar Hunt owned the Texans and he hired Hank Stram as the Texans head coach. The Texans played their home games at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, sharing the complex with the new NFL Expansion team, the Dallas Cowboys. Despite having one of the best teams in the AFL and winning the 1962 AFL Championship over the Houston Oilers, the Texans did not draw as many fans as their NFL rival Cowboys did. In 1963, just one season after winning the AFL Title, Lamar Hunt moved his team to Kansas City and renamed them the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs played their home games at Municipal Stadium in Kansas City from 1963-1971.
The Kansas City Chiefs remained a power house in the AFL and won a second AFL title in 1966 by beating the Buffalo Bills. That same season, the AFL and NFL reached a merger agreement and scheduled a game between each league Champion. This game would be originally referred to as the AFL - NFL World Championship game, later renamed the Super Bowl. The Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Green Bay Packers in the first World Championship game (Super Bowl I) by a score of 35-10.
In 1969, Hank Stram had his Kansas City Chiefs back in the Super Bowl. The Chiefs defeated the Oakland Raiders in the AFL Championship game, giving them their third AFL Title and faced the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. This time the Chiefs were ready and they helped solidify the AFL's presence in Pro Football by beating the Vikings 24-7 giving them their first World Championship. This was the final game played in AFL history as the two leagues merged in 1970 and the Chiefs joined the new AFC West division.
The Kansas City Chiefs began playing in their new state of the art stadium, Arrowhead Stadium, in 1972 at the Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City, MO. Arrowhead holds just under 80,000 and is considered the loudest outdoor NFL stadium. Hank Stram took the Chiefs to one more playoff season by winning the AFC West division in 1971. Stram moved on to coach the Saints in 1974 and he was replaced in Kansas City by Paul Wiggin. The Kansas City Chiefs suffered through 14 seasons and four head coaches without a playoff berth.
In 1989 the Kansas City Chiefs hired Marty Schottenheimer to be their new head coach. Schottenheimer led the Chiefs to the playoffs for six consecutive seasons and two AFC West division titles, their first division title in 22 seasons. The deepest that the Chiefs were able to advance into the NFL Playoffs was a loss in the AFC Championship game to the Buffalo Bills in 1993. Schottenheimer resigned as head coach after the 1998 season; second only to Hank Stram in wins for the Chiefs.
The Kansas City Chiefs revamped their offense in 2001 by hiring Dick Vermeil to be their head coach. Vermeil led the Chiefs to a league high 13 wins and an AFC West division title in 2003. But an early playoff loss to the Colts spoiled a great season. The Chiefs floundered in 2004 and again in 2005 failing to make the playoffs each season. Dick Vermeil retired at the end of the 2005 season and the Chiefs hired NY Jets coach, Herman Edwards.
The Kansas Chiefs headed into the 2006 season under the guidance of a new coach, an All Pro Running back, and Quarterback. With Edwards first season the Chiefs had a winning record, 9-7. However, they lost the wildcard game to the Colts. Also that year, owner Lamar Hunt died. In 2007, the Chiefs lost star running back Larry Johnson due to injury and were plagued with QB problems; ending the season at 4-12. So get your Kansas City Chiefs tickets today and watch this great team put it all together again for another playoff run!
