A brief history of the Houston Texans

The Houston Texans joined the NFL in 2002 as an expansion team. The cities previous team, the Houston Oilers, moved to Tennessee in 1997 and changed their name to the Titans.

When the Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore and the NFL awarded a new franchise to Cleveland in 1999, the NFL needed to add one more team to the league to create a balance of 32 teams. This would also pave the way for realignment and the creation of 4 divisions in each league versus only three. The Houston Texans joined the newly created AFC south along with the Indianapolis Colts, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tennessee Titans.

The Texans are owned by Robert McNair. McNair hired Dom Capers to be the Texans first head coach. Dom Capers was also the first head coach of the expansion Carolina Panthers in 1995. The Texans play their home games at Reliant Stadium. Reliant Stadium is a state of the art facility built in 2000 and seats up to 70,000 fans. Reliant Stadium is the first stadium in the NFL to have a retractable roof.

The Houston Texans used their first draft pick to select QB David Carr from Fresno State University. Carr was the Houston Texans starting QB when they began play in 2002. The Houston Texans are the first expansion team to win their first two season openers. They beat the Dallas Cowboys in their inaugural game in 2002 and then they beat the Miami Dolphins in their 2003 season opener. The Texans finished the 2002 season with a 4-12 record. The Houston Texans improved their regular season record each year from 2002 through 2004. They won 5 games in 2003 and 7 games in 2004.

The Houston Texans steady climb to the top ended after the 2004 season. Expectations were high as the Texans entered the 2005 season. They had improved their record each successive season and with all the pieces returning from the previous 7-9 season, there was no reason to believe the Texans were anything but a .500 or better team. For what ever reason, the wheels came off during the 2005 season. The Texans stumbled out of the gate and were 1-12 before the offensive coordinator, Chris Palmer was fired. Joe Pendry replaced Palmer and former head coach, Dan Reeves was brought in as a consultant. The Texans ended the 2005 season with a franchise worst, 2-14 record, and the first pick in the 2006 NFL draft.

Head Coach Dom Capers was fired at the end of the season and the speculation was the Texans were going to hire Dan Reeves to be the new coach. Instead the Texans hired former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator, Gary Kubiak to be the new head coach. Leading up to the 2006 NFL Draft most experts and fans alike were expecting the Houston Texans to select USC Running back and Heisman Trophy winner, Reggie Bush, with the first overall pick, or hometown favorite QB Vince Young. However, on the eve of the 2006 NFL draft, the Houston Texans announced that they had reached a contract agreement with North Carolina State's defensive end Mario Williams and would be selecting Williams with the first pick of the draft instead of Reggie Bush or Vince Young! Most fans were shocked and experts were dumb founded.

The Houston Texans will be second guessed for along time with the selection of Mario Williams over Reggie Bush or Vince Young. The 2006 season turned out to be a better one than fans expected with the Texans finishing 6-10. In 2007, the Texans picked up QB Matt Schaub in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons. He led the team to its first ever .500 season (8-8 record). So, get your Houston Texans tickets today and see if this team has truly turned itself around!
