A Brief History of the Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns were the most dominant professional football team of any era. The Browns began playing in 1946 as an original member of the All-American Football Conference (AAFC). The Browns were owned by Arthur McBride and he hired Paul Brown to coach his new team. The team's original nickname, "Brown Bombers" (for boxer Joe Louis), was selected from a fan poll; however it was soon shortened to Browns for publication ease. Although many people continue to believe that the fans choose Browns as their new team's nickname in honor of their popular head coach, Paul Brown. The Browns played their home games at Cleveland Municipal Stadium from 1946-1995.
The AAFC played for four seasons before merging with the NFL and the Cleveland Browns won all four AAFC Championships behind Paul Brown and Otto Graham at QB. The Browns lost only 4 games in 4 seasons including going 14-0 in route to the 1948 AAFC Championship. To prove that their success was not a fluke, the Cleveland Browns won the NFL Championship in 1950, their first season playing in the NFL. The Cleveland Browns played in 10 consecutive Championship games from 1946 - 1955 and if you include the 4 AAFC Championships, they won 7 Championship Titles including 3 NFL Titles in their first six seasons playing in the NFL. The Browns dominance began to fade by the mid 1950s although they did make it to the 1957 NFL Championship before losing to the Detroit Lions.
The Cleveland Browns failed to reach the post season from 1959-1963 during which time, Art Modell purchased the team in 1961 and he fired legendary head coach Paul Brown in 1962. Blanton Collier replaced Brown in 1963 and led the Browns to their 8th and last Championship in 1964. Collier would lead the Browns back to the Championship game in 1965, 1968 and 1969 but each time they lost. The Cleveland Browns had minimal success in the early 1970s and again in the 1980s but did not win another playoff game until 1986 when head coach Marty Schottenheimer led them to a Division Championship and a first round playoff win vs. the NY Jets. The Browns suffered three heart breaking losses to the Denver Broncos and John Elway in the AFC Championship game in 1986, 1987 and 1989.
The 1990s brought more heartache for the Cleveland Brown fans. In a stunning announcement in 1995, owner Art Modell decided to move his franchise from Cleveland to Baltimore stating the city of Cleveland's refusal to build him a new stadium. In a legal battle with the city, the Browns, and the NFL; a tentative agreement was reached that allowed Art Modell's team to move to Baltimore but the team name, logo and franchise records were to remain in Cleveland with the promise of a future franchise for the city. Modell moved his team (Players and Coaches) to Baltimore and they became known as the Baltimore Ravens. Cleveland did not have an NFL team from 1996-1998.
In 1999, the new Cleveland Browns began playing in the NFL. Ironically, the City of Cleveland did something for the new Browns that it would not do for the old Browns. The city built a new stadium. The new Browns would play their home games at Cleveland Browns stadium, a state of the art facility that seat's over 73,000 fans. The Browns record in 1999 was 2-14 but the fans did not care, they were just glad to have their team back. In the 8 seasons since their rebirth, the Cleveland Browns have had little to celebrate. Coach Butch Davis did lead the Browns to their lone playoff appearance since their rebirth in 2002. That one bright spot is surrounded by several years of very poor play.
The Cleveland Browns hired a new head coach in 2005, Romeo Crennel and he led the Browns to six wins, the most in 4 seasons. However, the Browns suffered another losing season in 2006; ending with a 4-12 record. The 2007 season was remarkably different! The Browns finished 10-6 and just missed a playoff spot. So, get your Cleveland Browns tickets today and see if Crennel and QB Derek Anderson will be able to pull off a return to the playoffs and make this a championship team once more!
