Cincinnati Bengals ticket holders watched their team battle into the NFL playoffs for the first time in eons in 2005. Only an injury to quarterback Carson Palmer stood between the Bengals and a shot at the Super Bowl. Head Coach Marvin Lewis is being hailed as a genius and the bengals are raring to go again in the 2006 NFL season. Lewis banked for the future in the 2006 NFL Draft by taking cornerback Johnathan Joseph in the first round. Joseph should push Tory James for a starting spot. Andrew Whitworth, the massive tackle from LSU, not only provides depth at the position, but has the ability to play elsewhere along the line if needed. Theres been nothing but steady progress under the even handed Lewis and fans are expecting more of the same as the 2006 NFL season progresses and Cincinnati Bengals tickets sell out earlier every week.

A brief history of the Cincinnati Bengals

After his dismissal from Cleveland, Paul Brown wanted to get involved in football again so he decided to form an ownership group and was granted an AFL franchise to begin playing in the AFL in 1968. Brown would have preferred an NFL franchise but agreed to the AFL deal because of the pending AFL - NFL merger. Paul Brown would coach his new team, of course and they played their home games at Nippert Stadium from 1968-1969. In 1970, the Bengals moved their home games to the newly built Riverfront Stadium in downtown Cincinnati. The name Bengals came from a previous Cincinnati professional football team in the early 1940s.

Paul Brown coached the Bengals for eight seasons before moved up to General Manager in 1976 and eventually to majority owner. The Brown family still owns the Bengals today. Although he was not able to accumulate the same success in Cincinnati that he had in Cleveland, Paul Brown did lead the Bengals to two AFC Central Division titles and three playoff appearances. The Bengals lost their first game in the playoff each time under Coach Brown.

In 1980, the Bengals hired former Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame lineman, Forrest Gregg to coach the Bengals. Gregg led the Bengals to their first Super Bowl appearance in 1981. The Bengals won the AFC Central division in 1981 with a 12-4 record. They beat the Bills in the first round of the playoffs and then they beat the Chargers for their first AFC Championship The Bengals then lost to the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XVI 26-21.

The Bengals remained competitive throughout the 1980s and in 1988, under the leadership of head coach Sam Wyche, the Cincinnati Bengals returned to the Super Bowl. The Bengals won their fourth AFC Central title in 1988 and their second AFC Championship by beating the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship game. Again the Cincinnati Bengals faced the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XXIII and again they would loose, this time by a score of 20-16 on a late fourth quarter touchdown pass from Joe Montana to John Taylor.

After a 1990 playoff loss to the LA Raiders, the Cincinnati Bengals fell on hard times. In a 14 year span, the Bengals went through 4 different head coaches and all failed to produce even a single winning season. In 2000, the Bengals began playing their home games at Paul Brown Stadium, a state of the art facility that seat over 65,000 screaming football fans.

The Bengals hired Washington Redskins defensive coordinator, Marvin Lewis to be their new head coach in 2003. Lewis lead the Cincinnati Bengals to back to back 8-8 seasons, which is nothing to brag about but when you consider what the previous 14 seasons had brought, it was a major accomplishment.

In 2005, Marvin Lewis had the Cincinnati Bengals back in championship form. The Bengals surprised everyone by winning the AFC North Division, their sixth division title, with an 11-5 record. The Bengals were facing their rival, the Pittsburgh Steelers, in the Wild Card round of the playoffs at home in Cincinnati. Their Pro Bowl Quarterback, Carson Palmer, was injured in the first series of the game and the Bengals never recovered. The Steelers won the game 31-17 and went on to surprise everyone with their record tying 5th Super Bowl title.

The Bengals pride was hurt but not their determination. Marvin Lewis has installed a new attitude in Cincinnati, a winning attitude that is sure to lead the Bengals to success over the coming seasons. Cincinnati Bengal tickets have been selling with a frenzy as the Bengals are a favorite to win Super Bowl XLI in January of 2007.
