A brief history of the Chicago Bears.

The Chicago Bears were originally known as the Decatur Staleys and they were owned by the A.E. Staley Company out of Decatur, IL. George Halas was the Staleys player/coach as they joined the newly formed NFL in 1920. The Staley Company gave the team to George Halas with a promise to keep the name Staleys as he moved the team from Decatur to Chicago in 1921 and began playing at Wrigley Field. The Staleys won the NFL Championship in 1921 with a 9-1-1 record. No Championship games were played from 1920 through 1932. Championships were awarded to the team with the best record.

In 1922, Halas changed the teams name to the Chicago Bears to coincide with their baseball counterparts at Wrigley Field, the Chicago Cubs. The Bears signed famous collegian, Red Grange in 1925 and took the team on a very successful 17 game road trip across the country. That trip helped many struggling NFL teams profit margin and propelled the NFL into becoming a popular professional sport. The Bears were an elite team during the 1920s but failed to win another NFL Title until 1932, the last season the NFL title that was decided by season records. The 1932 season ended with the Bears and Portsmouth Spartans tied for first place and played an un-official Championship game at Chicago Stadium, which the Bears won 9-0. The popularity of this game gave way to a NFL Championship game starting in 1933.

The Chicago Bears won 4 more NFL Championships between 1940 and 1947 including a whopping 73-0 win over the Washington Redskins in the 1940 NFL Title game. The Bears success declined during the 1950s but they rebounded to win their eighth NFL Title in 1963 with a 14-10 victory over the New York Giants. George Halas retired from coaching in 1967 but remained in the Chicago Bears front office until his death in 1983. His daughter, Virginia McKaskey, became the principle owner.

In 1971, the Chicago Bears moved from Wrigley Field to just up the street into Soldier Field. Soldier Field was built in the early 1920s as a memorial to WWI soldiers and has played host to many sporting events. Soldier Field was remolded in 2002 and is now seats 61,500 fans and is referred to as Soldier Field II. The Bears struggled to win games during the early 1970s but did make the playoffs in 1977 and again in 1979.

In 1982, the Chicago Bears hired hall of fame TE, Mike Ditka to become their head coach. Ditka led the Bears on a string of successful seasons not seen since Halas was the coach. From 1982 through 1992, the Bears appeared in the playoffs 7 times, won 5 division titles and in 1985 the Bears won Super Bowl XX with a convincing 48-10 route of the New England Patriots. The 1985 Chicago Bears defense is considered one of the greatest defenses of all time.

Mike Ditka resigned as the Chicago Bears head coach after the 1992 season. From 1992 through 2004 the Bears made only 2 appearances in the NFL Playoffs, 1994 and 2001. In 2004 the Bears hired defensive coordinator Lovie Smith as head coach. Lovie led the Bears to a division title and a playoff appearance in 2005, their first title and playoff appearance in 4 seasons. Since its inception, the Chicago Bears have played in over 1000 NFL games and lead all NFL teams with 671 total wins and counting. That number will likely grow by double figures in 2006 because the Bears have all but one starter returning making the 2006 Chicago Bears football tickets the hottest tickets in Chicago.
