Can the vaunted defense that Baltimore Ravens ticket holders have enjoyed for so many years get even better? You bet. The Ravens nabbed highly ranked defensive tackle Haloti Ngati in the first round of the NFL draft. Not content to sit on his hands, head coach Brian Billick added cornerback David Pittman in the 3rd round and safety Dawan Landry in the fifth. Marvin Lewis must be rubbing his hands in glee. But the guy the Ravens are really crowing about is wide receiver Demetrius Williams, their fourth round pick out of Oregon. Williams was ranked by some as on of the top five receivers in the draft. Williams averaged 16.7 yards a catch in his senior season and will definitely push Mark Clayton and Derrick Mason for a starting spot. The roster upgrades mean 2006 Baltimore Ravens tickets got meaner than ever.

A brief history of the Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens are a unique team. They are considered an expansion team but in reality, they are simply the old Cleveland Browns or Art Modell's franchise. Art Modell moved his franchise from Cleveland to Baltimore in 1996 with hopes of greener pastures. Modell claimed that the climate in Cleveland and the refusal of the city to build a new stadium was causing him financial hard ships. In a deal reached with the NFL and the city of Cleveland, the franchise would forfeit the team colors, logos, name and statistics. Basically the team was starting from scratch in Baltimore.

The nickname Raven was chosen from a fan contest drawing and the Baltimore Ravens were born. The Ravens played at old Memorial Stadium for two seasons while a new state of the art facility was being constructed. M&T Bank Stadium, which is now the home of the Ravens, opened in 1998 and seats over 70,000 Raven fans. Art Modell retained the contracts of his players and coaches from Cleveland and he hired Ted Marchibroda to be his new head coach.

The NFL was official back in Baltimore after a 14 year hiatus. The inaugural season had few highlights as the Ravens finished the season with a 4-12 record. In 1999, after three consecutive loosing seasons, Marchibroda was replaced by Brian Billick, former offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings. Billick led the Ravens to a respectable 8-8 record in 1999.

Steven Bisciotti purchased a minority interest in the Ravens from Art Modell in 2000 and completed the purchase of the franchise from Modell in 2004. Bisciotti is the second youngest owner in the NFL behind the Washington Redskins owner, Daniel Snyder. Bisciotti maintains a much lower profile than does Snyder.

In 2000, the Baltimore Ravens gave owner Art Modell something he never was able to achieve in Cleveland, a Super Bowl title. Behind a stingy defense, the Ravens stormed through the regular season with a 12-4 record, good enough for 2nd place in the AFC Central. The Ravens defeated the Denver Broncos in the Wild Card Playoff game and then the beat the favorite to win it all, Tennessee Titans in the divisional round. They traveled to Oakland the next week and beat the Oakland Raiders in the AFC Championship game. The Baltimore Ravens faced the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXXV. Behind a dominant defense that did not allow a single point out of the Giants offense, the Baltimore Ravens won Super Bowl XXXV by a score of 34-7.

The Baltimore Ravens returned to the playoffs in 2001 but were unable to emulate their 2000 improbably run to the Super Bowl. They lost to the Steelers in the 2nd round by a score of 27-10. 2003 and 2004 were rebuilding years as the Baltimore Ravens have been searching for offensive players to help support one of the top defenses in league history. The Ravens finished the 2003 season with a AFC North Division title and a 10-6 record. The Ravens lost to the Tennessee Titans in the 2003 Wild Card playoffs by a score of 20-17. The Baltimore Ravens slipped to 6-10 in 2005 due to injuries and a continued struggle from the offensive side of the ball. In the 2006 off-season the Ravens signed former League MVP and Tennessee Titan QB, Steve McNair.

The Ravens hope that McNair will inject some life into an woefully effective offense and can propel the Ravens to a second Super Bowl Title. The Baltimore Ravens ticket holders have been anxious to get the 2006 season started.
