A brief history of the Utah Jazz

The Utah Jazz are a National Basketball Association Team based out of Salt Lake City, Utah. The Jazz are currently a member of the Northwest Division in the Western Conference and are owned by Larry Miller. Jerry Sloan has been the Jazz coach since 1990 and they play their home games at the Delta Center in downtown Salt Lake City. The Delta Center was opened in 1991 and is also home to the Utah Blaze of the Arena Football League. The Delta Center currently seats 20,000 NBA Basketball fans.

The Utah Jazz have been in the NBA for over 30 seasons. They appeared in 20 consecutive playoffs from 1984 through 2003 and won 2 Western Conference Titles. They have yet to win an NBA Finals Championship.

The Jazz joined the NBA as an expansion team in 1974 from New Orleans. The Jazz first coach was Scotty Robertson but he was replaced before their inaugural season ended by Butch Van Breda Kolff. The Jazz split time between the Loyola Field house and the Municipal Auditorium to play their home games in New Orleans their first season. The Jazz moved to the Superdome to play their home games after their first season and remained there from 1975 through 1979. The Jazz spent 5 unsuccessful seasons in New Orleans despite having one of the best players in the NBA in Pistol Pete Maravich. After the 1979 season, the Jazz moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. The franchise decided to keep the nickname Jazz despite the non-existent Jazz culture in Salt Lake City. The Jazz played their home games at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City from 1979 until the Delta Center was opened in 1991.

After 4 seemingly identical loosing seasons in Utah, the Jazz made their first playoff appearance in 1984. The Jazz were led by Adrian Dantley and Darrell Griffith. The 1984 playoff trip marked the first of 20 consecutive playoff appearances for the Utah Jazz. In 1985 and 1986, the Jazz drafted John Stockton and Karl Malone. The pair would go onto to lead the Jazz over the next 2 decades and become the most successful guard/forward combination in the NBA. In 1990, head coach Frank Layden stepped down as head coach and assistant coach, Jerry Sloan took over the head coaching duties and has maintained that position ever since.

Jerry Sloan led the Utah Jazz to back to back NBA Finals appearances in 1997 and again in 1998. The Jazz lost both NBA Titles to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls 4 games to 2 in both series. The Utah Jazz were led by the Stockton - Malone combination with steady role players like Jeff Horacek, Bryon Russell and Shandon Anderson. After their two trips to the finals the Jazz made 5 more playoff appearances with Stockton and Malone leading the way. After the 2003 season, John Stockton retired and Karl Malone signed to play with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Utah Jazz dynasty, as it was, was now gone. The Utah Jazz and coach Jerry Sloan began to rebuild the team in 2004 with steady players like Andrei Kirilenko and Raja Bell. The Jazz missed the playoffs in 2004 for the first time in 20 years. They slipped to an abysmal 26 wins in 2005. The Jazz improved to .500 in 2006 with 41 wins and 41 losses. The 2005/2006 Utah Jazz were led by young star players like Mehmet Okur, Andrei Kirilenko, Matt Harpring and Deron Williams.

The Utah Jazz and their fans are looking for marked improvement again in the 2006/2007 season. Jazz tickets have once again become hot items in the Salt Lake City area with the buzz of the Utah Jazz returning to the NBA Playoffs.
