A brief history of the Seattle Supersonics

The Seattle Supersonics are a National Basketball Association Team based out of Seattle, Washington. The Sonics, as they are commonly referred as, are currently a member of the Northwest Division in the Western Conference and are owned by an Oklahoma City group led by Clay Bennett. New out of state ownership leaves the franchise and the city of Seattle in a state of unrest. Bob Hill is currently the head coach of the Sonics. The Sonics play their home games at the KeyArena downtown Seattle. The KeyArena, formerly known as the Seattle Center Coliseum, was opened in 1962 and renovated in 1994. The KeyArena currently seats over 17,000 Basketball fans.

The Seattle Supersonics have been in the NBA for almost 40 seasons. They have been in the NBA playoffs 22 times and have won 1 NBA Championship in 3 trips to the NBA Finals.

The Seattle Supersonics joined the NBA in 1967 as an expansion team. Their first coach was Al Bianchi and their first star player was Bob Rule. Legendary player/coach Lenny Wilkens joined the team in 1969 and became the head coach as well as keeping up his playing duties in 1970. Despite a franchise high, 47 wins in 1971/1972, Lenny Wilkens was traded before the 1972/1973 season. Legendary player Bill Russell was hired as head coach in 1974 and he led the Sonics to their first playoff appearance his first season as coach with star players like Fred Brown, Spencer Haywood and Slick Watts. Bill Russell left in 1978 and was replaced by Bob Hopkins. Hopkins was replaced by Lenny Wilkens after only 22 games. Wilkens led the Sonics to the Playoffs and their first NBA Finals. The Sonics lost the 1978 NBA Finals to the Washington Bullets in 7 games. The Sonics returned the NBA Finals in 1979 and faced the defending NBA Champion Washington Bullets. This time the Sonics got the best of the Bullets and won their only NBA Title in 5 games. The Sonics had star players like Gus Williams, Jack Sikma and NBA Finals MVP Dennis Johnson. Wilkens would coach the Sonics for the next 6 seasons and reach the playoffs 4 out of 6 years.

After several inconsistent seasons from the mid 80s to the early 90s, the Seattle Supersonics hired George Karl to coach the team in 1992. Karl ushered in a new era of Sonics dominance with players like Shawn Kemp, Gary Payton and Detlef Schremph. The Sonics reach the 1996 NBA Finals only to loose to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in 6 games. After 6 highly successful seasons in Seattle, George Karl left the team in 1999. Since Karls departure, the Sonics have been terrible inconsistent. They have missed the playoffs 5 of the last 8 seasons. Former Sonics player, Nate McMillen was hired to coach the team in late 2001 and he led the Sonics to a 52 win season in 2005 but left at the end of the season for a higher paying job in Portland.

The Seattle Supersonics posted a disappointing 35-47 record in 2006. Coach Bob Weiss was replaced by Bob Hill after only 30 games but saw little improvement. The Sonics have Star Players in Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis along with some young talent like Luke Ridnour and Damien Wilkens. Sonics ticket holders and fans expect an improved team during the 2006/2007 season. Only time will tell if this Sonic team rises to the occasion and produces some great moments this NBA season.
