A brief history of the San Antonio Spurs The San Antonio Spurs are a National Basketball Association Team based out of San Antonio, Texas. The Spurs are currently a member of the Southwest Division in the Western Conference and are owned by Peter Holt. Gregg Poppovich is the head coach for the Spurs and they play their home games at the AT&T Center in downtown San Antonio. The AT&T Center was opened in 2002 and is also home to the San Antonio Silver Stars of the WNBA. The AT&T Center currently seats over 18,000 Basketball fans. The San Antonio Spurs have been in the NBA for 30 seasons. They have been in 26 playoffs and won 3 NBA Championships. The Spurs appeared in 8 playoffs during their 9 seasons spent in the ABA and are currently the only former ABA franchise to win an NBA Title. The Spurs are one of the most successful franchises in league history and have never missed the playoffs in back to back seasons. In fact they have only missed 5 playoffs in almost 40 seasons. The San Antonio Spurs franchise was a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1967. The team was based out of Dallas and they were known as the Dallas Chaparrals. Despite posting winning records and reaching the ABA playoffs, attendance and interest in the team was poor in the Dallas area. The franchise changed their name from Dallas to Texas in hopes of reaching a broader fan base in 1970 but to no avail. At the end of the 1973 season, the team was put up for sale. A group from San Antonio purchased the team and moved them to San Antonio. With a change in cities came a change in nicknames, the franchise was now known as the San Antonio Spurs. At the end of the 1976 season, the Spurs were one of 4 ABA teams invited to join the NBA. The Spurs continued to play well in their new league making the playoffs their first 7 seasons in the NBA. The Spurs best seasons during their early days in the NBA came in 1982 and 1983 when they reached the NBA Western Conference playoffs only to loose both times to the Los Angeles Lakers. This early Spurs team had stars like George Gervin, Artis Gilmore and Mike Mitchell. The Spurs struggled over the next 6 seasons with consistency. They missed the playoffs 3 times in 6 seasons. David Robinson joined the team in 1989 and they started a string of 16 playoffs appearances in 17 seasons. A rare poor season in 1997, which saw the Spurs loose a franchise record 62 games, enabled them to draft Tim Duncan from Wake Forrest. With Duncan and Robinson in the paint, the Spurs immediately became a NBA Title contender. The Spurs won their first NBA title in 1999 with big men Duncan and Robinson. They returned in 2003 to win their second NBA Title. Robinson played only a small role in their 2nd title as Tim Duncan and Tony Parker led the way. The Spurs won their last NBA title in 2005 without David Robinson. Tim Duncan now had a surrounding cast that included Tony Parker, Stephen Jackson and Manu Ginobili. The Spurs won a franchise record 63 games in 2006 but lost in the playoffs to in their state rival, Dallas Mavericks. San Antonio Spurs fans have been some of the most loyal fans in sports. All of the Spurs home games are sell outs and season tickets go fast. The 2006/2007 season should be another banner year for the Spurs as they make a run at their 4th NBA Title.
