A brief history of the Phoenix Suns The Phoenix Suns are a National Basketball Association Team based out of Phoenix, Arizona. The Suns are currently a member of the Pacific Division in the Western Conference and are owned by Robert Sarver. Mike DAntoni took over the head coaching duties in 2004 and been the head coach ever since. The Suns play their home games at the US Airways Center in downtown Phoenix. The US Airways Center, formerly America West Arena, was opened in 1992 and is also home to the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League and the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA. The US Airways Center currently seats over 18,000 Basketball fans. The Phoenix Suns have been a member of the NBA since 1969. They have reached the NBA Playoffs 26 times in their history but have yet to win an NBA Title. They have reached the NBA Finals twice loosing both times, once to the Celtics in 1976 and then to the Bulls in 1993. The Phoenix Suns joined the NBA in 1968 as an Expansion team. The Suns were owned by a Investment group from Tucson, Az and they hired Jerry Colangelo to be the GM. Red Kerr was the teams first head coach and Gail Goodrich was their first star player. The Suns struggled to win 16 games in their first season. Kerr was replaced midway through the 1970 season. Colangelo took over the coaching duties on an interim basis and led the Suns to their first playoff berth in only their 2nd season in the league. Cotton Fitzsimmons was hired as head coach to start the 1971 season and he would go on to become the most popular coach in Suns history. Despite posting close to 50 win seasons, the Suns missed the playoffs in 1971 and 1972. John MacLeod took over the coaching reigns in 1974 and led the Suns to the NBA Finals in 1976. The 1976 Suns were led by Paul Westphal, Alvan Adams and Curtis Perry. The Suns lost the 1976 NBA Finals in 6 games to the Boston Celtics. The Suns missed the playoffs in 1977 but returned in 1978 and began a streak of 8 consecutive season in which they made the post season. John MacLeod was replaced during the 1987 season after 13 wonderful seasons as coach. The Suns missed the playoffs from 1986 through 1988 but returned with vengeance in 1989. The Suns began a streak of 13 consecutive playoff appearances in 1989. During this span the Suns posted a franchise record in 1993 of 62 regular season wins and reached the NBA Finals for the second time. The Suns lost the 1993 NBA Finals to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. The 1993 Suns were led by head coach Paul Westphal and All Star players Charles Barkley, Dan Majerle, Cedric Ceballos, Tom Chambers, Kevin Johnson and Danny Ainge. At the end of their amazing 13 year run the Suns found themselves near the bottom of the NBA. The missed the playoffs 2 of 3 times from 2002 through 2004 and lost 53 games in 2004 due to player trades and rebuilding. Colangelo sold the Suns in 2004 to Robert Sarver. Sarver hired Mike DAntoni to coach the Suns midway through the season. DAntoni turned the Suns around the following season. The Suns went from 29 wins in 2004 to 62 wins in 2005, the second best turnaround in NBA history. The 2005 Suns were led by League MVP Steve Nash and All Stars Amare Stoudemire and Shawn Marion. The Suns lost the 2005 Western Conference Finals to the San Antonio Spurs. Because of a season ending injury to Amare Stoudemire, the 2006 Suns were not expected to make much noise in the NBA playoffs. They surprised everyone by reaching their second consecutive Western Conference Finals only to loose to the Dallas Mavericks in 6 games. The 2006/2007 Phoenix Suns are one of the Favorites to win the NBA Championship. With a healthy Amare Stoudemire and two time League MVP Steve Nash, the Suns ticket holders are expecting a run at the title come seasons end.
