A brief history of the Philadelphia 76ers The Philadelphia 76ers are the oldest team in the National Basketball Association (NBA). They began playing as the Syracuse Nationals in 1939. The Nationals joined the NBA in 1949 when the NBL merged with the BAA to form the NBA. The Nationals owner was Danny Biasone and they were coached by Al Cervi. The Nationals were a dominant team in the 1950s and won the NBA Finals Championship in 1955 over the Fort Wayne Piston. In 1963, Irv Kosloff bought the Nationals from Biasone and moved the team to Philadelphia. Their nickname was changed to the 76ers and soon after that name was shortened to the Sixers. Either name is now acceptable. The Sixers played their home games at the Convention Hall or the Philadelphia Arena from 1963-1967. The Spectrum was built in 1967 and the Sixers called it home for 30 years. The Philadelphia 76ers had one of the greatest teams in league history in 1966-1967. The started off winning 45 of their first 49 games and finished with an improbable 68-13 record. Led the Wilt Chamberlain, Billy Cunningham and Hal Greer, the Sixers cruised to the NBA Finals Championship by beating the Celtics in 5 games in the Eastern Conference finals and then beating the Warriors in 6 games for the title. The Sixers made it back to the playoffs over the next four seasons but failed to recapture the NBA title. The Philadelphia 76ers, just 5 seasons removed from posting the greatest season in NBA history, posted the worst. In 1972-1973, the Philadelphia 76ers won only 9 games all season. The next season the Sixers hired Gene Shue to be their new head coach. In 1976-1977 the Sixers acquired Julius Irving (Dr. J) from the ABAs New Jersey Nets and the team was bought by F. Eugene Dixon. Dr. J would lead the Sixers to the NBA Finals three times from 1977 1982, each time loosing a close battle. Harold Katz bought the Philadelphia 76ers in 1982 and he acquired center Moses Malone from the Houston Rockets. The Sixers dominated the regular season, winning 65 games. The Sixers cruised through the Eastern Conference playoffs by sweeping the New York Knicks and defeating the Milwaukee Bucks in five games. The Sixers met the Los Angeles Lakers for the NBA Finals Championship. The Lakers had beaten the Sixers in two finals over the past 3 seasons. This time it was the Sixers turn as they swept the Lakers in 4 games for their third NBA Finals Championship. In the past twenty seasons, the Philadelphia 76ers have reached the playoffs many times and even reached the NBA Finals in 2001 but they have failed to win another NBA title since the 1982-1983 season. The Sixers opened their new home, the Wachovia Center, in 1996. The Wachovia Center is a state of the art facility built for hockey and basketball. The center seats over 21,000 basketball fans. The Wachovia Center is home for not only the Sixers but the NHL Flyers and the Arena Football leagues Philadelphia Soul. The 2005 Philadelphia 76ers were led by All Star Guard Allen Iverson. An old friend is now coaching the Sixers, Maurice Cheeks who played for the Sixers during their last Championship in 1983. Cheeks led the Sixers to a 38-44 record, just missing the NBA Playoffs. The Philadelphia 76ers begin the 2006-2007 season with a lot of optimism. Many Sixers fans feel that with the right leadership, Mo Cheeks, and the right core of players, the Sixers can once again be a force in the East. Sixers basketball tickets have once again become a hot item in the Philadelphia area as Sixers fans gear up for another exciting season of NBA Basketball in Philadelphia.
