A brief history of the Orlando Magic The Orlando Magic are a National Basketball Association Team based out of Orlando, Florida. The Magic are currently a member of the Southeast Division in the Eastern Conference and are owned by Rich DeVos. Brian Hill is currently serving his second stint as the head coach of the Magic. The Magic play their home games at the TD Waterhouse Centre in downtown Orlando. The TD Waterhouse Centre was opened in 1989 and is also home to the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League. The TD Waterhouse Centre currently seats over 17,000 Basketball fans. The Magic are scheduled to open a new arena in downtown Orlando in 2010. The Orlando Magic have been in the NBA for 17 seasons. They have played in 8 playoffs, won 1 Division title and 1 Eastern Conference Title. They have played in 1 NBA Finals which they lost to the Houston Rockets in 1995. The Orlando Magic joined the NBA in 1989 as an expansion team. The Magic won only 18 games their first season but steadily improved over the next four seasons with hard nosed play solid draft picks. Prior to the 1993/1994 season, coach Matt Guokas stepped down as head coach and Brian Hill replaced him. Hill led the young Magic team to their first playoff spot in 1994. The Magic won their first division title in 1995 under Coach Brian Hill. The Magic were loaded with great young talent like Shaquille ONeal, Penny Hardaway, Nick Anderson, Horace Grant and Dennis Scott. The Magic rode a wave of momentum all the way through the Eastern Conference Playoffs into the 1995 NBA Finals. The Magic were swept 4 games to 0 in the 1995 NBA Finals by the Houston Rockets but they appeared to be a dynasty in the making. The 1996 Orlando Magic were a better team than the one that reached the NBA finals in the previous year, unfortunately for them, so were the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls, led by a rejuvenated Michael Jordan swept the Orlando Magic in the 1996 Eastern Conference Finals. Shaquille ONeal left the Magic for the Los Angeles Lakers during the off-season and the Magic dynasty was over before it every got off the ground. The Magic would miss the playoffs 2 times in the next 4 seasons and slowly but surely dismantle a truly magical team. The Orlando Magic had a 3 year playoff run under coach Doc Rivers from 2001 through 2003 and were led by All Star Tracy McGrady. Despite the presence of All Stars Tracy McGrady and Juwon Howard, the Magic lost 61 games in 2004. After a 1-10 start, the Magic replaced coach Doc Rivers with Johnny Davis. The Magic improved a lot in the 2005 season despite the absence of Tracy McGrady who left in the off-season to the Houston Rockets. They finished the regular season with 36 wins, 15 more than the previous seasons Brian Hill returned in 2005 to coach the team for the second time. The 2005/2006 Magic were led by a bevy of young talent like Dwight Howard, Hedo Turkoglu, Jameer Nelson and DeShawn Stevenson. The Magic finished the 2006 season with 36 wins and missed the playoffs for the third straight season. There is a lot of optimism surrounding the Magic as the 2006/2007 season approaches. Most experts and Magic Season ticket holders expect the Magic to return the NBA playoffs at seasons end. One thing for sure, this young Magic team will be fun to watch in 2006/2007.
