A brief history of the New Jersey Nets The New Jersey Nets are a National Basketball Association Team based out of East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Nets are currently a member of the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference and are owned by Bruce Ratner. The Nets play their home games at Continental Airlines Arena in downtown East Rutherford. The Continental Airlines Arena was opened in 1981 and currently seats over 19,000 Basketball fans. The New Jersey Nets won 2 Titles in 7 playoff appearances while they were a member of the now defunct ABA. They have made 15 playoff appearances but have yet to win a Title in the NBA since joining the league in 1976. The New Jersey Nets were a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1967. The Franchise was owned by trucking magnate Arthur Brown and he had intended the team to play in New York but a venue conflict forced the team to New Jersey. The Franchise was originally called the Americans. The Americans were coached by Max Zallofsky and led by Tony Jackson and Dan Anderson. The Americans tied the Kentucky Colonels for the final playoff spot at the end of their inaugural season and were set to have a one game playoff. The Americans home court was booked so the team had to scramble to find a place to play the playoff game with the Colonels. They scheduled the game to be played at the Long Island Arena in Commack, New York but when the teams arrived at the arena for the game, the courts was in such poor conditions that League Commissioner, George Mikan forfeited the game to the Colonels. The Franchise choose to stay in Long Island for their second season and changed their name to the New York Nets. The name Nets was chosen because it rhymed with 2 other New York Sports teams, Jets and Mets. The New York Nets only drew about half the attendance they were getting in New Jersey, at the end of their second season, the team was sold to Roy Boe. The Nets made drastic improvements by year 3 and made their playoff appearance in 1970. With Lou Carnesecca as coach and Rick Barry as the team star, the Nets reached the ABA Finals in 1972. The Nets won their first ABA title in 1974 with Kevin Loughery as coach and Dr. J Julius Erving leading the team on the court. The Nets won their 2nd ABA title in the final ABA season in 1976 with Dr. J leading the way. The New York Nets were one of 4 ABA teams that merged with NBA in 1976. The $3 million entrance fee combined with the $4.8 million fine the Nets had to pay the New York Knick for invading their NBA territory left the franchise short on cash. The Nets were unable to give Dr. J a promised pay raise and therefore ended up selling Erving to the 76ers for $3 million. Without Dr. J, the Nets were the worst team in the NBA for 2 seasons while they rebuilt. The Nets moved back to New Jersey prior to the 1977/1978 season and began playing at the Louis Brown Athletic Center. The Nets made only 1 playoff appearance in their first 5 seasons in the NBA. In 1982, the Nets began a string of 5 straight Playoff appearances but during this span, they were only able to win 1 playoff series when they upset the 76ers and Dr. J in the first round of the 1984 NBA Playoffs. The New Jersey Nets slipped back into the bottom of the NBA from 1987 through 1991. They resurfaced in 1992 and made 3 trips to the playoffs with Chuck Daley as the head coach. After Daley left in 1995, the Nets reached the playoffs only once in the next 7 seasons. The Nets made an amazing turnaround in 2003 when they went from 6th in the Division to 1st under head coach Byron Scott. The Nets reached the NBA finals 2 seasons in a row only to loose to the Lakers and San Antonio Spurs. The Nets have reached the NBA playoffs each of the past 5 seasons with super star players like Jason Kidd, Vince Carter, Richard Jefferson and Cliff Robinson. The Nets are currently coached by Lawrence Frank, who took over for Byron Scott during the 2003/2004 season. The Nets are considered one of the Favorites to win the Eastern Conference in 2006/2007 and possible the NBA Title. Ticket holders for the New Jersey Nets are sure to get their moneys worth as this team tries to win their first NBA title.
