A brief history of the Milwaukee Bucks

The Milwaukee Bucks are a National Basketball Association Team based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Bucks are owned by Democratic Senator Herb Kohl. Terry Stotts is the current head coach. The Milwaukee Bucks have won 1 NBA Title and played in 25 post seasons since they joined the league in 1969. The Bucks are currently a member of the Central Division in the Eastern Conference and they play their home games at the Bradley Center. The Bradley Center was opened in 1988 and is also home to the Marquette University mens basketball team. The Bradley Center currently seats over 18,000 NBA basketball fans.

The Milwaukee Bucks were an expansion team in 1969. They were originally owned by Wesley Pavalon and Marvin Fishman. Larry Cosetllo was their first coach. The Bucks finished last in their inaugural NBA season and won the rights to the first pick in the 1970 NBA Draft. The Bucks selected UCLA center Kareem Abdul Jabbar (Lew Alcindor) in the first round of the 1970 NBA Draft and became immediate contenders. The Bucks made the NBA playoffs their second season in the league and Alcindor was named Rookie of the Year. The Bucks traded for Oscar Robinson in 1971 and won the NBA Finals Championship in only their third season in the league. The Bucks faced the Baltimore Bullets in the 1971 NBA Finals and swept the Bullets in 4 games. Coach Costello had the Bucks back in the NBA Finals in 1974 but they lost a hard fought 7 game series to the Boston Celtics. At the end of the 1974/1975 season, which saw the Bucks missed the playoffs for the first time since their inaugural season in 1969, the Bucks traded Kareem Abdul Jabbar to the Lakers. Kareem Abdul Jabbar would go onto to lead the Lakers to 5 more NBA Titles and retire as the NBAs all- time leading scorer. The Bucks have yet to win another Conference title, much less an NBA Title.

The Milwaukee Bucks struggled to find consistent play after Jabbar was traded in 1975. Don Nelson replaced Larry Cosetllo as coach in 1977 and soon had the Bucks back on top contending for a conference title. The Bucks won 60 games in 1981 and won their division title 7 seasons in a row from 1980 through 1986 and 12 straight playoff appearances from 1980 through 1991. The Bucks were led by All Star Players like Sidney Moncrief, Marques Johnson, Bob Lanier, Quinn Buckner, Junior Bridgeman and Terry Cummings. The Bucks of the 1980s were never able to crack the strangle hold that the Celtics, 76ers and later Pistons and Bulls had on the Eastern Conference during this long span of playoff runs. Each Buck season ended with a disappointing loss in the Eastern Conference Playoffs.

The Milwaukee Bucks suffered their longest playoff drought from 1992 through 1998. The Bucks made the playoffs in 1999 and have made 5 trips to the post season in the past 7 seasons. The closest the Bucks have come to winning the Eastern Conference title came in 2001 when they finished first in their division with 52 regular season wins and lost a close 7 game series to their old nemesis the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2001 Eastern Conference Championship. The 2001 Bucks were coached by George Karl and featured Star Players like Ray Allen, Glenn Robinson and Sam Cassell.

Terry Porter replaced George Karl in 2004 but was fired after a disappointing 2005 season that saw the Bucks win only 30 games and miss the playoffs for only the second time in 7 seasons. The Bucks hired Terry Stotts as their new coach in 2005 and he guided his new Bucks team to a 40-42 regular season record and a spot in the 2006 NBA playoffs. The Bucks lost in the first round of the playoffs but a new era of great basketball had been born. The 2006/2007 Bucks enter the season with a great group of young players like Michael Redd, Bobby Simmons, T.J. Ford and Andrew Bogut. Bucks ticket holders are sure to get their moneys worth in 2006/2007 as the Bucks make another run at the NBA Playoffs.
