A brief history of the Memphis Grizzlies The Memphis Grizzlies are a National Basketball Association Team based out of Memphis, Tennessee. The Grizzlies are currently owned by Michael Heisley. Heisley recently announced he was selling the team to an investment group headed by former NBA Player Brian Davis. The Grizzlies have made 3 playoff appearances in their brief history. The Grizzlies are coached by Mike Fratelo. The Grizzlies play in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference and play their home games at the FedExForum in downtown Memphis. The FedExForum was built in 2004 as part of an arrangement that brought the Grizzlies to Memphis from Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada. The FedExForum currently seats over 18,000 basketball fans. The Grizzlies began playing in the NBA as an expansion team in 1995 in Vancouver. The Grizzlies joined the league along with the Toronto Raptors to become the NBAs only 2 Franchises that play in Canada. The team was originally owned by OrcaBay, a large entertainment group from Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada. The Grizzlies first head coach was Brian Winters and their first star players were Blue Edwards and Bryant Reeves. The Grizzlies struggled mightily during their first 4 seasons in Canada and won fewer than 20 games each season. The team was sold to businessman Michael Heisley in 2000. Poor attendance after the NBA lockout in 1999 forced Heisley to look for a new home for the Grizzlies. After considering New Orleans, St. Louis and Anaheim, the Grizzlies moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 2001. The new Memphis Grizzlies played their home games at the Pyramid Arena from 2001 through 2004 when the new FedExForum was opened. The Grizzlies hired legendary Los Angeles Lakers player and GM Jerry West as their new General Manager in 2002. In 2004, under the leadership of new head Coach Hubie Brown, the Grizzlies made the NBA Playoffs for the first time in team history with a franchise best 50 wins to only 32 losses. The Grizzlies were swept 4 games to 0 in the first round of the 2004 NBA Playoffs to the San Antonio Spurs. Hubie Brown stepped down as coach early in the 2005 season. TNT Analyst, Mike Fratello took over the team and led them back to the playoffs. The Grizzlies were swept again in the 2005 playoffs 4 games to 0, this time to the Phoenix Suns. There was a lot of optimism surrounding the Memphis Grizzlies as they entered the 2005/2006 NBA season. The Grizzlies did not disappoint their season ticket holders as they finished a franchise best third in their division and made their third straight trip to the NBA Playoffs. The Grizzlies lost in the first round of 2006 NBA playoffs and were swept in 4 games again for the third straight season. This time they lost to the Dallas Mavericks. Although the Grizzlies have made 3 straight playoff appearances, they have yet to win even a single playoff game. They are currently on a 12 game playoff game losing streak. The Grizzlies hope to end that streak when the 2007 NBA Playoffs begin. The Grizzlies enter the 2006/2007 season as a favorite to reach the NBA Playoffs for the fourth straight season. The Grizzlies will once again be led by head coach Mike Fratello. The Grizzlies will feature an all star cast of players that include international star Pau Gasol along with Mike Miller, Eddie Jones and Shane Battier.
