A brief history of the Los Angeles Clippers The Los Angeles Clippers are a National Basketball Association Team based out of Los Angeles, California. The Clippers franchise has made only 7 playoff appearances since joining the NBA in 1971. The Clippers are owned by real estate mogul Donald Sterling and coached by Mike Dunleavy Sr. The Clippers play in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. They have called the Staples Center home since 1999. The Staples Center is a state of the art facility built in 1998 in Los Angeles and is also home to the NBAs Lakers, the WNBAs Sparks, the NHLs Kings and the AFLs Avengers. The Staples Center currently seats over 18,000 basketball fans. The Clippers franchise was an expansion team in 1970 from Buffalo. They were originally known as the Buffalo Braves. They started the same season as the Portland Trailblazers and the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Braves first head coach was Dolph Schayes and their first star players were Bob Kauffman and Don May. The Braves struggled for 3 seasons before finally breaking into the playoffs in 1974. The Braves made three straight trips to the playoffs from 1974 through 1976 under new head coach Dr. Jack Ramsey and star player Bob McAdoo. In the summer of 1976, the team was sold to John Y. Brown who had intentions of moving the team to his home state, California. After 2 poor seasons and bad attendance (and sell of the team to Irv Levin), the league voted to allow the Braves to move west. In 1978, the Buffalo Braves became known as the San Diego Clippers. The move to San Diego did not improve the Clippers play by much. The Clippers missed the playoffs every year in San Diego which turned out to be just be just 6 seasons. Current owner, Donald Sterling bought the Clippers in 1982 and lobbied the NBA to allow him to move his team to Los Angeles. The move was approved by 1984 and the Clippers became known as the Los Angeles Clippers. They began playing at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena were they remained from 1984 until the Staples Center opened in 1999. The Clippers spent their first 7 seasons in Los Angeles mired in futility including a league worst 12-70 record in 1987. In 1992, the Clippers made their first playoff appearance since their move west some 13 seasons before. The 1992 Clippers were led by Danny Manning, Charles Smith, Loy Vaught, and Ron Harper and coached by Larry Brown. The Clippers returned to the playoffs the following season with the same cast of characters. Both trips to the playoffs resulted in first round losses. Injuries to Danny Manning cost the Clippers a third straight playoff appearance in 1994 and by 1995, Manning was gone and the Clippers were back on the bottom with only 17 wins. The Los Angeles Clippers made an excuse me trip to the playoffs in 1997 behind head coach Bill Fitch and star players Lou Vaught, Malik Sealy and Rodney Rogers. The Clippers lost in the first round of the playoffs in 1997 and spent the next 3 seasons at the bottom of the league. From 1998 through 2005 the Clippers struggled to find a winning formula. They went through 6 different coaches during that time span. In 2004, the Clippers hired current head coach Mike Dunleavy Sr. Dunleavy improved the Clippers record each of his first 3 seasons at the helm. In 2006, the Los Angeles Clippers finished in second place in the Pacific Division by winning 47 games, the most they have won since 1975. The Clippers were led by All Stars Elton Brand and Sam Cassell. The Clippers beat the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs for their first playoff series win since 1976. The Clippers lost in the second round of the playoffs to the Phoenix Suns 4 games to 3. The Clippers surprised a lot of fans and experts with their exceptional play in 2006. In the 2006-2007 season, the Clippers were led again by Sam Cassell, however multiple player injuries kept them out of the playoffs - missing it by just two games. Clippers Tickets are selling like crazy with anticipation that this team could improve on the 2006 and 2007 seasons and make a major impact in the NBA playoffs and possibly win the NBA title.
