A brief history of the Indiana Pacers The Indiana Pacers are a National Basketball Association Team based out of Indianapolis, Indiana. The Pacers are currently owned by Melvin and Herb Simon and coached by Rick Carlisle. The Pacers won 3 ABA titles before joining the NBA but have yet to win a title in the NBA. The Pacers play in the Central Division of the Eastern Conference and play their home games at Conseco Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis. The Conseco Fieldhouse was opened in 1999 and is also home to the WNBAs Indiana Fever. The Conseco Fieldhouse currently seats over 18,000 basketball fans. The Indiana Pacers were a charter member of the ABA that began playing in 1967. The Pacers played at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum for their first 6 seasons and then moved to the Market Square Arena in1974 where they remained for the next 25 years. The Pacers were the most successful of all the ABA franchises. The Pacers won 3 ABA titles in four years and appeared in 5 of the 9 ABA Finals. The ABA Pacers were coached by Bob Slick Leonard and had a cast of All Star players like Mel Daniels, George McGinnis, Rick Mount and Roger Brown. In 1976, when the ABA folded, the Indiana Pacers were one of 4 ABA teams that were invited to join the NBA. Unfortunately for the Pacers and their fans, the move to the NBA was the beginning of some lean years for the Pacers. From 1977, their first season in the NBA, until 1989, the Pacers made only 2 trips to the post season and lost in the first round each of those 2 years. In 1990, the Pacers began a new era of winning and have missed the playoffs only once in the past 17 seasons. The early 1990s Pacers were led by Reggie Miller and Chuck Persons. Larry Brown was the head coach of the Pacers from 1993 through 1997. At the end of the 1997 season, Brown was replaced by legendary Boston Celtic Larry Bird. Bird instilled a hard nosed work ethic that propelled the Pacers to the brink of an NBA title. The Pacers reached the NBA Finals under Coach Larry Bird in 2000. The Pacers were led by Reggie Miller, Jalen Rose and Rick Smits. The Pacers faced the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2000 NBA Finals but lost the series in 6 games. After the 2000 season, Larry Bird moved up into the front office and head coaching duties went to another legendary player, Isiah Thomas. Thomas coached the Pacers for 3 seasons, leading them into the playoffs each time but they failed to live up to the standards that had previously been set under Coach Bird. Rich Carlisle took over the coaching duties in 2004 and led the Pacers to their best regular season record in franchise history, 61-21. The Pacers lost in the Conference finals to the Detroit Pistons that year. Carlisle and the Pacers have returned to the playoffs in 2005 and 2006 but have yet to advance as far as the Conference Finals. The 2006/2007 season for the Indiana Pacers is full of optimism. The Pacers have a proven head coach in Carlisle and All Star players like Stephen Jackson, Jermaine ONeal and Peja Sojakovic. The ticket holders for the Indiana Pacers are expecting great things from this young team. Years of disappointment in the playoffs have created a anxious optimism among the players and fans in Indiana. The 2006/2007 Pacers should be one of the teams to look out for this coming season.
