A brief history of the Houston Rockets

The Houston Rockets are a National Basketball Association Team based out of Houston, Texas. The Rockets are currently owned by Leslie Alexander and coached by Jeff Van Gundy. The Rockets have won 2 NBA titles, 4 conference titles and 4 division titles since their inception in 1967. The Rockets play in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference and play their home games at Toyota Center in Houston. The Toyota Center was opened in 2003 and is also home to the WNBAs Houston Comets. The Toyota Center currently seats over 18,000 basketball fans.

The Rockets joined the NBA in 1967 along with the Seattle Supersonics as an expansion team. The Rockets were originally based out of San Diego, California. The Rockets played 4 seasons in San Diego and made 1 playoff appearance before moving to Houston in 1972. Wayne Duddleston bought the Rockets in 1971 and moved the team to Houston in hopes of better attendance. The Rockets played their home games at various arenas in and around the Houston area including a few in Waco and San Antonio. The Rockets finally settled into the Summit Arena where they played from 1975 until 2003. By the end of the decade, the Rockets had only made 2 playoff appearances since the move to Houston but every thing changed when Moses Malone arrived. Moses joined the Rockets in 1977, coming from the ABA. By 1980, Moses was the most dominant player in the paint. In 1981, despite a sub .500 regular season record, Moses led the Rockets to the NBA Finals. The Rockets lost the 1981 NBA Finals to the Boston Celtics but a new generation of winning was formed.

The Rockets returned to the NBA Finals again in 1986, this time they were led by big men Hakeen Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson. Again the Rockets lost to the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals. The Rockets continued their stellar play throughout the decade and into the 1990s. In 1994 the Houston Rockets won their first NBA Finals Championship by beating the New York Knicks in 7 games. They repeated as NBA Champs in 1995. This Rockets dynasty was led by Coach Rudy Tomjanovich. The Rockets had a bevy of Superstars on their team like Hakeem Olajuwon, Vernon Maxwell, Kenny Smith, Clyde Drexler, Robert Horry and Sam Cassell. The Rockets continued to be a force in the Western Conference up until the 2000 season.

In 2000, the Houston Rockets failed the make the playoffs for only the second time in 16 seasons. The Rockets missed the playoffs from 2000 through 2003. In 2004 the Rockets returned to the playoffs under Coach Jeff Van Gundy. The Rockets were led by Center Yao Ming from China and stars like Steve Francis, Jim Jackson and Cuttino Mobley. The Rockets added superstar Tracy McGrady to the team in 2005 and had their best regular season record in over a decade. The Rockets lost in the first round of the 2005 playoffs but had very high expectations leading into the 2005/2006 season. Key injuries to their 2 best players, Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady forced the tandem to miss several games and caused the Rockets to be on the outside looking in when the playoffs came around.

After a disappointing 2005/2006 season, the Houston Rockets hope to rebound and contend for an NBA Title in 2007. They have the key players in place and baring any major injuries are sure to make the playoffs. Rocket ticket holders are anxiously awaiting the start of the season so they can cheer their Rockets on to victory.
