A brief history of the Golden State Warriors The Golden State Warriors are a National Basketball Association Team based out of Oakland, California. The Warriors are currently owned by Chris Cohen and coached by Don Nelson. The Warriors have won 2 NBA titles and appeared in 19 playoffs since joining the NBA in 1950. The Warriors play in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference and play their home games at The Arena in Oakland. The Arena was opened in 1966 and has been the Warriors home since 1971. The Arena seats over 19,000 basketball fans. The Warriors franchise began in 1946 as a charter member of the old BAA. The franchise was located in Philadelphia and owned by Peter Tyrrell. The Warriors won the first ever BAA championship by defeating the Chicago Stags in 1947. In 1950, the Warriors joined the NBA when the BAA and NBL merged into one. The Warriors won their first NBA Championship in 1956 with George Senesky as coach and stars like Paul Arizin, Neil Johnson and Joe Graboski. In 1959 the Warriors drafted Wilt Chamberlain from the University of Kansas. Chamberlain was an immediate star and began to set scoring records at unreachable heights. At a home game played in Hershey, PA in 1962, Chamberlain scored a record 100 points in a single game. At the end of the 1962 season, the Warriors were purchased by Franklin Mieuli and he moved the franchise to San Francisco. The San Francisco Warriors reached the NBA Finals twice in 1964 and in 1967 loosing both series. When the Oakland Coliseum Arena was opened in 1966, the Warriors began playing many of their home games there. At the end of the 1971 season, the Warriors officially changed their name to the Golden State Warriors. The Golden State Warriors shocked many NBA Fans and experts in 1975 by winning the NBA Finals Championship. The Warriors finished the regular season with a respectable 48-34 record. The reached the NBA finals with a series win over the Seattle Supersonics and Chicago Bulls. They faced the heavily favored Washington Bullets in the NBA Finals and swept the Bullets in 4 games for their second NBA Championship. The 1975 Warriors were coached by Al Attles and led by All Star players Rick Barry, Jamaal Wilkes and Butch Beard. The Golden State Warriors slipped from contention after the 1977 season. The Warriors failed to reach the playoffs from 1978 to 1986. From 1987 through 1994, the Warriors flirted with consistency and winning. They reached the playoffs 5 times but lost in the early rounds each time. Since their last visit to the playoffs in 1994, the Golden State Warriors have been at the bottom of the NBA. Until recently, the Warriors finished last in their division every year and have yet to post a record above .500 since 1994. More recently, the Warriors have slowly but surely started to gain some respectability. They have won just under 40 games for the past 4 seasons but a failure to consistently improve their record has caused management to bring in new coaches. The 2005/2006 Golden State Warriors finished the season with a 34-48 record. Good enough for fifth place in their division but on the outside of the playoffs for the twelfth season in a row. The 2006 Warriors were coached by Mike Montgomery and led by star players Jason Richardson, Derek Fisher and Troy Murphy. At the end of the 2006 season, Montgomery was replaced by legendary coach Don Nelson. Nelson coached the Warriors the last time they reached the playoffs back in 1994. Ticket holders for the Golden State Warriors hope that Nelson can turn the franchise around and get them back in the playoffs in 2006/2007.
