A brief history of the Denver Nuggets The Denver Nuggets are a National Basketball Association Team based out of Denver, Colorado. The Nuggets are currently owned by billionaire E. Stanley Kroenke and coached by George Karl. Karl brings with him a successful resume as head coach at Cleveland, Golden State, Seattle and Milwaukee. Karl took over the Nuggets job in 2005 and immediately led them to a division title in his first year. The Nuggets play in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference. They play their home games at the Pepsi Center in downtown Denver. The Pepsi Center was opened in 1999 and is also home to the National Hockey Leagues Colorado Avalanche and the Arena Football Leagues Colorado Crush.. The Pepsi Arena currently seats over 19,000 basketball fans. The Denver franchise was a charter member of the American Basketball Association or ABA that began playing in 1968. They were originally known as the Rockets and they made the playoffs every year they were apart of the ABA. The Rockets first coach was Bob Bass and he led the Rockets for two seasons before leaving. The Rockets won their first ABA division title in 1970 with stars like Spencer Haywood and Larry Jones. With hopes of moving to the NBA, the Rockets changed their name to the Nuggets in 1974 because the NBA already had a Rockets franchise in Houston. The Nuggets nickname has stuck ever since. The Denver Nuggets won their 2nd division title in 1975 and reached the ABA finals in 1976 before loosing to the New Jersey Nets and Julius Dr. J Irving. The 1976 season was the last for the ABA before they merged with the NBA. The Nuggets brought a formidable team to the NBA with stars like David Thompson, Dan Issel, Bobby Jones and Paul Silas. The Nuggets won their division in their first NBA season but lost in the playoff Western Conference Semifinals. 1980 was the first season the Denver Nuggets failed to reach post season in team history, 12 seasons. The Nuggets returned to post season in 1982 after a 2 year absence. The Nuggets made the playoffs each of the next nine seasons but lost early in the playoffs each season with the exception of 1985 when they lost in the Western Conference Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers. The 1990s and early 2000s were lean years for the Nuggets. During this 13 year span, the Nuggets reached the playoffs only twice, 1994 and 1995, and lost early in the playoffs both times. The Nuggets drafted a young super star from Syracuse University in 2003 named Carmelo Anthony. Anthony played only one season in College, but for that one season he was clearly the best player in the Nation as he helped the Syracuse Orangemen win a National Title. Once in Denver, Anthony immediately helped the Nuggets returned to respectability and has since helped the Nuggets make three straight post season appearances. The Denver Nuggets won their 8th division title in 2005/2006 under new coach George Karl. They finished the regular season with 44 wins but stumbled in the playoffs against the Los Angeles Clippers, losing in the first round to the Clippers 4 games to 1. The Nuggets hope to return to the playoffs in 2006/2007 and with stars like Carmelo Anthony, Andre Miller, Marcus Camby and Earl Boykins their chances look very good. Super Star players like Carmelo Anthony are sure to keep Denver Nugget ticket holders on the edge of their seats for years to come.
