A brief history of the Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks are a National Basketball Association Team based out of Dallas, Texas. The Mavs, as they are commonly referred to, are owned by internet billionaire Mark Cuban and are coached by Avery Johnson. Johnson played in the NBA for 16 seasons before moving into coaching. Johnson took over the head coaching duties from Don Nelson in 2004 and led the Mavs to their finest seasons in the league. The Mavs play in the Southwest Division in the Western Conference; they play their home games at the American Airlines Center. The American Airlines Center was opened in 2001 and is also home to the National Hockey Leagues Dallas Stars and the Arena Football Leagues Dallas Desperados. The American Airlines Center is located in downtown Dallas and currently seats over 19,000 basketball fans.

The Dallas Mavericks joined the NBA in 1980. The team name Mavericks came from the Western TV Series Maverick, starring James Garner, who was one of the original team owners. Dick Motta, who led the Washington Bullets to the 1978 NBA Finals Title, was hired as the teams first head coach and they played their home games at Reunion Arena in Dallas. The Mavs played at Reunion Arena from 1980 through 2001. Coach Motta had his expansion Mavericks in the playoffs by 1984 and over 7 seasons, the Mavs made the playoffs 6 times and were a dominant team in the Western Conference. This early Mavs team featured All Star players like Rolando Blackman, Mark Aguirre, Sam Perkins, Derek Harper, Brad Davis, Dale Ellis and Detlef Schremph. John MacCloed took over the coaching duties from Dick Motta in 1988 but after a poor season in 1989 he was fired just 11 games into the 1990 season. MacCloed was replaced by Richie Adubato. The Mavs made the playoffs in 1990 and then went on a decade recluse winning a league low 11 games in 1993 and 13 games in 1994.

The Dallas Mavericks hired legendary coach Don Nelson to lead the team in 1998. Nelson slowly but surely brought this team back from the abyss they had been in for most of the decade. In 2000, the Mavericks were bought by eccentric internet billionaire Mark Cuban. Cuban was bent on winning and put every effort into allowing the Mavs to be successful. In 2001, the Mavs made the playoffs for the first time in 10 seasons and have made the post season every season since. The Mavs boasted a league high 60 wins in 2003 only to lose the Western Conference Finals to the San Antonio Spurs. Avery Johnson replaced an ailing Don Nelson as head coach of the Mavericks in 2004 and led the Mavs to a 58-24 season, losing in playoffs to the Pheonix Suns.

The Dallas Mavericks won 60 games in 2005-06. The Mavs are led by international player Dirk Nowitzki from Germany. Jason Terry, Josh Howard and Jerry Stackhouse help round off the team. The Mavs beat the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round of the 2006 NBA Playoffs then they beat the defending NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs in the second round. They faced the Phoenix Suns in the 2006 NBA Western Conference finals and won their first and only Conference Championship after beating the Suns in 6 games. The Dallas Mavericks faced the Miami Heat in the 2006 NBA Finals and were up 2 games to 0 before the Heat blazed past them to win the next 4 games and the Championship. Although the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons ended on a sour note, Mav fans are buying up season tickets in anticipation of another NBA Title run this coming season.
