A brief history of the Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls are a National Basketball Association Team based out of Chicago, Illinois. The Bulls are currently owned by Jerry Reinsdorf and are coached by Jim Boylan. The Bulls play in the Central Division in the Eastern Conference and play their home games at the United Center. The United Center was opened in 1994 and is located in the Near West Side of Chicago and is also home to the NHLs Chicago Blackhawks. The United Center replaced the Chicago Stadium and currently seats over 22,000 basketball fans.

The Chicago Bulls joined the NBA in 1966 as an expansion team and immediately posted the best season ever by an expansion team. The 1966-1967 Bulls were coached by Red Kerr and led by Guy Rodgers, Bob Boozer and Jerry Sloan. The Bulls made the playoffs their first season, loosing in the first round to the St. Louis Hawks. The Bulls played their home games at the International Amphitheatre during their first season and moved into their new home, Chicago Stadium in 1967. The Bulls played at the Chicago Stadium until 1994.

The Chicago Bulls made the playoffs seven times during the 1970s. Each trip was met with a loss in either the Semifinals or the Conference Finals. At the end of the decade the Bulls were near the bottom of the league. From 1978 through 1984, the Bulls made only one trip to the Playoffs, a 1981 loss in the Eastern Conference Semifinals to the Boston Celtics. The Chicago Bulls fortunes were forever changed in 1984 when they selected a young Guard from North Carolina in the NBA draft named Michael Jordan.

Michael Jordan forever changed the game of basketball with his electric play. He led the league in scoring most every season during his first 5 years in the league. He was a one man show and single handedly led the Bulls into the playoffs each season. But the Bulls could not advance in the playoffs against more balanced teams. The Bulls drafted Scottie Pippen in 1988 and signed Phil Jackson to coach the Bulls in 1990. In 1991, the Bulls put it all together and won their first of six NBA Finals Championships.

The Chicago Bulls won the NBA title 3 times in a row from 1991 1993. The Bulls lost in the Eastern Playoffs in 1994 and 1995 after Michael Jordan prematurely retired from the game for a few years. Jordan returned near the end of the 1995 season and the Bulls returned to the perch atop the NBA in 1996. The Bulls again won the NBA title 3 times in a row from 1996 1998. In 1996 they set an NBA record with 72 regular season wins. At the end of the 1998 season and their 6th title, Michael Jordan once again retired and the Bulls front office dismantled the team including allowing head coach Phil Jackson to leave. The Bulls spent the next six seasons at the bottom of the NBA heap.

The Chicago Bulls began to pull themselves out of the cellar in 2004-2005 with Scott Skiles as their head coach and players like Ben Gordan, Kirk Hinrich and Eddy Curry. The Bulls made the playoffs in 2005, 2006, and 2007. They lost in the 1st round of the playoffs in 2005 and 2006; and in the 2nd round in 2007. However, Chicago Bulls fans hope that this new Bulls team will grow into a dynasty similar to the one that dominated the 1990s. The Bulls enter the 2007-2008 season with a lot of expectations. Chicago Bulls season ticket holders expect the Bulls to improve upon the previous three seasons and advance deep into the playoffs. Only time will tell if this new Bulls regime has what it takes to make it to the NBA Finals. However, you can almost hear the fans of Chicago screaming "Da Bulls"!
