A brief history of the Boston Celtics No other NBA team in history has more NBA Championships (16) than the Boston Celtics. The Celtics have set a standard in basketball similar to that of the New York Yankees in baseball or the Dallas Cowboys in football. The Celtics are the face of the NBA and the NBA Championship. The Boston Celtics joined the Basketball Association of America (BAA) in 1946. The BAA and National Basketball League (NBL) merged in 1949 and became known as the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Celtics played at the Boston Arena in 1946 and also the Boston Garden. The Boston Garden would serve as their permanent home from 1946-1995. The Celtics were owned by Walter Brown and he hired John Russell to be the first head coach of the Celtics. The Celtics struggled during the early years of the franchise but their fortunes turned around in 1950. The Celtics acquired rookie guard Bob Cousy from the Chicago Stags when the Stags disbanded and they hired Red Auerbach to be their new head coach. Auerbach and Cousy led the Celtics to their first winning season in 1951. The Celtics made the playoffs from 1951-1956 but lost each time before reaching the NBA Finals. In 1957, the Celtics traded for rookie center Bill Russell and their Championship dominance began. The Boston Celtics won 11 NBA Championships from 1957 through 1969 with Bill Russell at center including an unprecedented 8 in a row. Russell was surrounded by all star players like Bob Cousy, Sam Jones, KC Jones, and John Havlicek. When Auerbach stepped down as head coach, Bill Russell was named coach and player. As coach and player, Russell led the Celtics to the 1968 and 1969 NBA Championships. Head Coach Tommy Heinsohn led the Boston Celtics to six playoff appearances and two more NBA Championships during the 1970s with players like Dave Cowens, John Havlicek, Paul Silas and Jo Jo White. Near the end of the decade, the Celtics drafted a kid from Indiana that still had one year of college basketball left. The Celtics mortgaged their future on a sophomore at Indiana State University named Larry Bird. The gambled paid off as Larry Bird led the Celtics into a new era of Championships during the 1980s. The Celtics surrounded Larry Bird with All Stars Robert Parrish, Kevin McHale, Dennis Johnson, and Nate Tiny Archibald. Head Coach Bill Fitch was at the helm when the Celtics won the NBA title in1981. K.C. Jones took over for Fitch in 1984 and led the Celtics to the NBA Championship in 1984 and again in 1986. Age and injuries caught up with the Celtics during the last half of the 1980s. The unexpected death of first round pick, Len Bias, left the Celtics in a hole that they could not climb out of. Bias was expected to lead the Celtics to their next era of Championships but instead he died the day after the draft of an apparent drug over dose. The Boston Celtics continued to be a formidable team during the late 80s and early 90s, making the playoffs 8 of 9 seasons. But each trip to the playoffs was met with a bitter defeat. The Celtics began playing at their new home, the TD Banknorth Garden (the Fleet Center) in 1995. The new Garden seats over 18,000 basketball fans and has the same parquet floor that was used in the old Boston Garden. Despite missing the playoffs in the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007seasons, the city of Boston is glowing with anticipation of another great Celtic run at the NBA Finals. Boston Celtic basketball tickets have always been one of the hardest tickets to get in Boston and if the Celtics play as expected, the 2007-2008 season will be no different.
