A brief history of the World Series

The Major League Baseball World Series has been played for over 100 years. The World Series brings the winners of the American League and National League pennants (Champions) together for a baseball series to determine who the best team in all of baseball is. The World Series consist of a best of seven format except for 1903, 1919, 1920 and 1921, when a best of nine series format was used. The term World Series was first used in the 1880s and was short for World Championship Series. The shortened version, World Series continues to be used today.

The World Series began in 1903 and with the exception of 1904 and 1994 there has been a World Series every year. A players strike in 1994 caused the cancellation of half the season including the playoffs and World Series. In 1904, the National League Champion New York Giants and their manager John McGraw refused to play the American League Champion Boston Americans because McGraw considered the upstart American League as a minor league.

The very first World Series was played in 1903 between the American League champion, Boston Americans, later called the Red Sox, and the National League Champion Pittsburgh Pirates. The Boston Americans upset the Pirates 5-3 and helped prove that the new American League could play with and beat the National League on the field.

The World Series has evolved over the course of 100 years. A portion of player salaries for the World Series games have always come from gate receipts. Gate Receipts now equal less than 1% of the Series revenue earned by the league. Teams used to alternate home field for each game but once teams started moving further west, this became impossible. A new 2-3-2 format was adopted in 1924. The team with home-field advantage alternated each year from American League to National League until 2003 when the League that won the All Star game was awarded home-field advantage. The American Leagues Designated Hitter rule started to be used in 1975. Now the DH is in effect when the World Series is played at an American League park and not in effect when played at a National League park.

The Playoffs leading up to the World Series has also evolved. From 1903 1968 only one team from each league played in the post season or World Series. As major league baseball expanded each league was divided up into two conferences. From 1969 1993 the four winners of each division played in the post season. The American and National League Championship series was a best of five series until 1985 when it was expanded to a best of seven series. The winners of these series won the right to play in the World Series. In 1994, baseball realigned and created three divisions in each league and added an extra round to the playoffs. The six division winners plus two Wild Card teams, one from each league played in the post season. The Division round of playoffs consists of a five game series with the winners advancing to the League Championship for a seven game series. The Winners of the Championship series advance to the World Series.

An MVP award was adopted in 1955 and is awarded to the player who has the best series. The very fist World Series MVP was Johnny Podres who helped the Brooklyn Dodgers defeat the New York Yankees for the first time in five tries. Three players have won two MVP awards, Sandy Kofax with the Dodgers, Bob Gibson with the Cardinals and Reggie Jackson. Jackson won the award as a member of the As in 1973 and again as a member of the Yankees in 1977. No player has won more than two World Series MVP awards.

The excitement of the World Series or Fall Classic is unmatched in any sport. No other sport offers a team a chance to win a Championship regardless of the deficit. Tension mounts on every pitch and every swing of the bat. Heroes are made, Champions are crowned and curses are dismissed each October.
