A Brief History of the Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles are a major league baseball team located in Baltimore, MD. The Orioles are in the eastern division of the American League and they are currently owned by Peter Angelos and they play their home games at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore. Oriole Park was opened in 1992 and was built as a replacement to old Memorial Stadium. Oriole Park is a retro style park that seats over 48,000 baseball fans.

The current Baltimore Orioles roots actually began in Milwaukee as the Brewers. The Brewers played in the American League in 1901 and were managed by Hugh Duffy. The charter American League Baltimore Orioles moved to New York in 1903 and became known as the New York Yankees. The Brewers moved to St. Louis in 1902 and began playing as the St. Louis Browns. The Browns played at Sportsman Park in St. Louis from 1902 through 1953.

The St. Louis Browns were primarily a second tier team. Despite having some great players like George Sisler, Rogers Hornsby, Satchel Page, and Branch Rickey, the Browns won only one American League pennant over the 51 years they were in St. Louis. The Browns won the American League pennant in 1944 with an 89-65 record. The Browns were managed by Luke Sewell and led by first baseman George McQuinn and pitcher Nels Potter. The Browns faced their cross-town rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals, in the World Series and lost four games to two. In 1953, owner Bill Veck sold the Browns to a Baltimore based group who immediately moved the team to Baltimore and adopted the old nickname Orioles.

The new Baltimore Orioles began playing a Memorial Stadium in Baltimore in 1954. The fortunes of the Orioles did not change until the mid 1960s. In 1966, with Hank Bauer as their manager, the Baltimore Orioles won the American League Pennant. Led by All Stars like Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Boog Powell, and Jim Palmer, the Orioles won the World Series by defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0. The 1970s were the most prominent decade for the Orioles. Beginning in 1969, the Orioles won 3 straight American League Pennants and the 1970 World Series. Earl Weaver was the Orioles manager as the Orioles posted three consecutive 100-win seasons. The Orioles won two more division titles during the 70s and the American League pennant in 1979.

The Baltimore Orioles remained a contender for the American League pennant during the first half of the 1980s. They won their third World Series crown in 1983 with all stars like Eddie Murray, Cal Ripken, and Scott McGregor. The Orioles defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4 games to one for the last championship. Since that last championship, the Orioles have seen good and bad times. They opened their new stadium, Oriole Park, in 1992 and made their first playoff appearance since the 1983 World Series in 1996. The Orioles won their last division title in 1997 under manager Davey Johnson but have not finished higher than third in the division since then.

Over the past decade, the Baltimore Orioles have slumped to fourth place in the division every season except for 2004 when they finished third. The Orioles have struggled to win 70 games each season and have prompted outrage among the fans of Baltimore. With only 70 wins in 2006, fans staged a walk out during a game at Oriole Park to protest the teams' poor performance the ownerships lack of willingness to field a winning team. Baltimore Orioles ticket sales have slumped despite young stars like Miguel Tijada, Melvin Mora, and Erik Bedard. The Baltimore Orioles will enter the 2007 season with a lot of pressure to succeed. They need to put aside a decade of failure and rely on young arms and young bats to get them to their first playoff appearance in 10 years.
