A brief history of the Cleveland Cavaliers The Cleveland Cavaliers are a National Basketball Association Team based out of Cleveland, Ohio. The Cavs, as they are known, are owned by David Katzman and are coached by Mike Brown. Mike Brown took over the Cavs head coaching duties in 2005 before that he was an assistant coach in the NBA for 13 seasons. The Cavs play their home games at the Quicken Loans Arena, formerly known as Gund Arena or The Gund. The Quicken Loans Arena or The Q is located in downtown Cleveland and was opened in 1994 and replaced the Coliseum in Richfield which was located closer to Akron than Cleveland. The Q was built in downtown Cleveland to bring the fans of Cleveland closer to the team and it currently seats over 20,000 basketball fans including 2,000 clubs seats and 92 luxury suites. The Cleveland Cavaliers have never won an NBA title nor have they won a Conference title. They have won only one Division title in their 35 seasons. The Cavs joined the NBA in 1970 as an expansion team. They posted a league low, 15 wins during their inagural 1970-71 season. The team gradually improved under head coach Bill Fitch and made the playoffs for the first time and won their first and only division title in 1976. The Cavs made the playoffs three times in a row from 1976 through 1978 but lost each trip to the playoffs before reaching the NBA Finals. The Cavs made only one playoff appearance (1985) from 1979 through 1987. In 1988, the Cavs began a string of success that had them reach the playoffs 9 times in 11 seasons. Legendary head coach Lenny Wilkens led the Cavs to five playoff appearances with All Star players like Mark Price, Hot Rod Williams, Craig Ehlo and Brad Daugherty. Head Coach Mike Fratello took over the reigns in 1994 and that same season the Cavs moved into their new home, Gund Arena. Coach Fratello led the Cavs to 4 more playoffs in 6 seasons. This Cavs team was led by All Stars like Chris Mills, Bob Sura and Tyrone Hill. The Fratello led Cavs lost in the first round of the NBA playoffs all 4 trips. The Cleveland Cavaliers experienced some lean years from 1999 through 2005 finishing at or near the bottom of the league each season. They turned their fortunes around in the 2005-06 season by winning 50 games, their highest since 1993. Led by head coach Mike Brown and All Stars like LeBron James, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Donyell Marshall the Cavs finished second in their division in 2006. They beat the Washington Wizards 4 games to 2 in the first round of the playoffs and pushed the defending NBA Champion Detroit Pistons to seven games before losing in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The Cleveland Cavaliers have arguable the greatest young player in the game in LeBron James. With LeBron on their side, the Cavs are destined for multiple Championships. Cavalier tickets have been the hottest tickets in the game ever since the Cavs drafted this young phenom out of a local Akron, Ohio High School in 2003. Fans in the Cleveland area and experts around the league expect the Cavs to take the next step in 2006-07 by advancing to the NBA Finals. There is a lot of pressure on this young team but if last season told us anything, the Cavs feel no pressure!
