Tom Petty Information

Thomas Earl Petty (Tom) was born in Gainesville, Florida on October 20, 1950. He is a Grammy Award winning rock and roll singer/songwriter and guitarist. Tom became interested in music at the age of ten when he met Elvis Presley on the Florida set of the movie "Follow That Dream". After seeing The Beatles perform on Ed Sullivan's show in 1964, he knew he wanted to have his own band. In spite of harsh disapproval by his father, he went on to pursue a musical career.

Petty sang with three different bands, before forming the Heartbreakers in 1976. They recorded and released their first album, "Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers", in 1976. Their music was at first slow to catch on. However, their second album, "You're Gonna Get It!", released in 1978, did much better. With the release of their third album, "Damn the Torpedoes", in 1979, their success was insured. They were now stars! In 1988, Tom Petty was a founder of the group the "Traveling Wilburys" along with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison. They released two albums.

In 1989, Tom released his first solo album, "Full Moon Fever". That year he signed a secret contract with Warner Bros. Records while still under contract to MCA. His first album for them, "Wildflowers", released in 1994, was a huge success. It was his second solo album. In 1996 he went back with the Heartbreakers. He has appeared in several movies and TV shows. In 2006, he was hired by ABC to play at the NBA playoffs. He and the Heartbreakers played at half time at Super Bowl XLII in 2008. In the summer of 2007, Tom reformed one of his pre-Heartbreakers bands, "Mudcrutch". He and Mudcrutch are going on tour on May 30, 2008.
