The Police Information

    In January of 1977, Stewart Copeland (American drummer), formed the rock band, The Police, with two British performers, Henry Padovani (guitar) and Sting (Gordon Summer vocalist) in London, UK. In May of that year, Sting and Copeland joined Mike Howlett and Andrew Summers (guitar) to form "Strontium 90" They had one performance and broke up. Then in July 1977, Copeland reformed The Police with Padovani, Sting and Summers. Padovani left the group in August due to his poor performance. In 1978, The Police released their first single "Roxanne", and their first album, "Outlandos d'Amour" without having a recording contract. When Copeland's older brother, Miles, heard "Roxanne", he arranged a recording contract with A&M Records. A&M re-released "Roxanne" and The Police became a big hit in the UK.

    With the release of their second album, "Reggatta de Blanc", in 1979, The Police had their first number one hit: "Message In A Bottle". They went on to win six Grammys in the early 1980s. Sting started his solo career in 1980. As he became more and more successful, tensions between him and Copeland increased. After the end of their tour for their fifth album, "Synchronicity", The Police broke up. Each member then pursued a solo career. At the 2007 Grammy Awards, The Police reformed to give a performance and it was announced that they would go on a world tour for the 30th anniversary of the release of "Roxanne".
