The Cure Information The Cure is an English alternative rock band (with punk and gothic overtones) that was started in Crawley, England in 1976. The group arose from an earlier high school band, The Obelisk, formed in 1973. Two of its former members, Robert Smith and Marc Ceccagno, formed a new band, Malice, in 1976 with some other former classmates. After Ceccagno left the band, they were heavily influenced by punk rock. Consequently, they changed their name to Easy Cure in January 1977. Easy Cure had a hard time finding a lead vocalist, so Smith took the spot himself in September 1977. Hansa Records then picked them up after they won a talent contest sponsored by Hansa. However, no recordings were ever released. The band broke with Hansa in March of 1978 and Smith renamed the band The Cure. They then received a recording contract with Fiction Records. Their first single, Killing an Arab was released in December 1978 amidst calls of racism. However, the band denied it. They claimed the song was based on the story The Stranger by Albert Camus. The Cure released their first album in 1979 Three Imaginary Boys. Their second album, Seventeen Seconds released in 1980 became a hit in the U. K. It started the gothic genre of rock. In 1982, their producer convinced them to musically reinvent themselves. By 1986, they were a worldwide success, known for their dark and gloomy music with its mixture of upbeat tunes. Their eleventh album, Bloodflowers, released in 2000, was nominated for a Grammy in 2001. The band cancelled their world tour in August of this year to complete work on their thirteenth album (a double album) due out next spring. In February 2008, The Cure will start their new world tour. They will be playing in North America from May until June 2008. The current members of The Cure are: Jason Cooper (drummer/percussionist), Simon Gallup (bass guitarist), Robert Smith (lead vocalist), and Porl Thompson (guitarist).
